Hammer Looking To Contend For 2006 Pat Bourdow Memorial ROY In ASALMS

Lexington, Michigan (01/30/2006): The ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts boasts talented fields week in and week out. Drivers from all walks of life with various degrees of experience make the ASALMS one of the most competitive traveling series’ in the country.

With the ASALMS multiplying by three in 2006, drivers and teams alike have more options and more opportunities in front of them as the 2006 season is fast approaching. Sun Prairie, Wisconsin driver, Nick Hammer is one of those opportunists. The 23-year-old rookie hopes his experience in four events in 2005 with the ASALMS will aid in his efforts to secure the 2006 Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title!

For the 2006 season, Hammer will be running for the Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title in the televised ASALMS Challenge Division. In addition, Hammer will make select appearances in the ASALMS Northern Division and run a partial schedule back at Madison in the ASA Late Model Division when the schedule allows.

“Last year was my first season ever in a car and I thought we did a lot better than expected.” Stated Hammer as he reflected on the 2005 season. “We accomplished our goal of making every race at Madison and we made three of the four shows with the ASALMS at the end of the season. We did real well I thought” Hammer added.

As for the 2006 season, Hammer has set himself another goal he certainly hopes to accomplish. “We want to make every race and improve every week in the Challenge Division.” Hammer continued. “We’re going for the Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title and I know how tough the rookies were last year, so we have our work cut out for us, but I know my team and I are up for the challenge.” Hammer ended.

Hammer made select appearances in 2005 with the ASALMS and qualified for three of the four events he entered. In addition, Hammer finished third in the GM Performance Part Shootout at the Baer Field (IN) Speedway on September 11, 2005.

“I was very surprised at how soon this kid picked up the mit to get in the game.” Added ASALMS Northern Division Director, Steve Einhaus. “He had no race car experience and they purchased the equipment from Gerry Gunderman. It was the car that Todd Kluever won with at Grundy County in the ASALMS in 2004.” Einhaus explained.

“What a polite young kid and awesome parents.” Einhaus continued. “As to be expected, he struggled at the beginning of the season at Madison, but found his footing and was real fast at the end of the season.” Einhaus added.

In addition to his four appearances with the ASALMS, Hammer ran the full season in the ASA Late Model Division at the Madison (WI) International Speedway and finished 15th in the final points standings, and fifth in the Rookie of the Year title chase. Hammer also won the Best Appearing Car Award at the fast 1/2 mile high-banked paved oval in Oregon, Wisconsin.

“Nick won our fan’s choice for the nicest car at Madison. It showed all year and even if they had problems one week, the next week the car came back impeccable.” Einhaus continued. “I think he’ll fit right in with the ASALMS competitors and it will allow him to gain a lot of knowledge while racing along side of some of the best in the business. They are fun people and I’ll miss them weekly at MIS but at least I’ll get to see them on the road. Ended Einhaus.

In addition to running full-time at Madison, Hammer also saw time in 2005 at the Wisconsin Dells (WI) Speedway. Hammer began his racing career in motorcycles and stayed there for 12 years. In motorcycles competition, he won four state championships and finished as high as second at nationals. The 2005 season was Hammer’s first year in a full bodied race car!
