ASA Midwest Tour Drivers Celebrate Winning Weekend

The weather was cool at Elko Speedway but Touring Star Dean Cornelius (included for being highest non-Star in points after Elko 125) was hot as he led the majority of the Super Late Model 40 lap feature including the most important, the final lap. Cornelius put on a clinic as he ran away from the field leaving his competition far behind. The #19 of Jake Ryan charged hard trying to catch Cornelius but couldn’t gain any ground until a late race caution brought out by Benny VanCleve gave Ryan the position he was working for. Not for a lack of trying, Ryan still wasn’t able to take the lead from Cornelius, leaving Ryan with second place. Jacob Goede (#72), Bryan Roach (#09) and Jason Schneider (#11) rounded out the top five. Fellow ASA Midwest Tour drivers Steve Anderson, Touring Star Adam Royle, Donny Reuvers, Joey Miller, and Jonathan Eilen rounded out the top 10. Darrin Giles,Nick Murgic, and Chad Walen were also in the main event.

Touring Star Nathan Haseleu of Marshall, Wisconsin, cruised to victory in the Pepsi 100 Super Late Model special at Madison International Speedway. Haseleu topped a field of twenty-four cars. Brandon Hill led the field to the green flag. Haseleu made an inside pass on lap twelve for the lead. From there on it was all Haseleu. Kyle Calmes finished third, Brian Johnson Jr. finished fifth, and Touring Star Kenny Richards in ninth. Trent Snyder was tenth, Hill twelfth, Jacob Goede sixteenth, Touring Star Dave Feiler seventeenth, and Touring Star Steve Carlson twenty-first, after submitting to mechanical woes.

Steve Carlson, of West Salem, Wis., won the Whelen 25 lap feature at LaCrosse Speedway after fighting his way to the front from a mid-pack starting position. Carlson collected his second win of the young season and was also the fast qualifier.

Dan Lensing competed at Wisconsin's Dells Raceway Park and finished sixth in the feature Saturday night.

Collin Bamke and Tom Schuette, neither of which made the Elko 125 inaugural event hopped into Limited Late Models at Jefferson Speedway in preparation for the ASA Midwest Tour Jefferson 100 presented by Lancaster Toyota May 19. Steve Dobbratz from Rio, WI is a regular competitor at Jefferson Speedway and will also be competing in the ASA Midwest Tour event. He advanced several positions through the field and finished second in the feature Saturday night; Bamke finished sixteenth. ASA Midwest Tour tech official and pace truck driver Jeff Steenbergen brought his “Jefferson 100” Limited Late Model to Jefferson and won the fast dash.

Bamke then went home to Slinger on Sunday and raced his Super Late Model to a fifth place finish.

Hill, Bamke, Johnson, and Calmes are all 2007 Rookie of the Year contenders in the ASA Midwest Tour.

“When you look at the results from the weekend it shows how well our competitors are doing all over the Midwest while supporting their local race tracks on Tour off-weekends. I am very proud of each and every one of them and their continued success,” commented ASAMT VP Steve Einhaus.

The American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by Echo Outdoor Power Equipment will hold its second event of the season Saturday May 19 at Wisconsin's Jefferson Speedway in the running of the Jefferson 100 presented by Lancaster Toyota.
