Points Battles, Mid-Mods Add To Action At ABC Saturday
by Nick Gima

Ashland, WI -- Fans will get more than they bargained for when racing action resumes Saturday, August 19, at the ABC Raceway.

Besides the WISSOTA Midwest modifieds making their first-ever appearance here during the Heartland Communications-sponsored show, the track’s five regular weekly classes will run their penultimate program for the season. That means that there is precious little time for competitors to improve on their positions in the track points standings or lock down their claims to championships.

About the only driver who can breathe the least bit easily is Scott Lawrence of Superior, whose lead in the WISSOTA super stock standings has grown steadily to 76 points over the past few weeks. Lawrence has registered three straight feature wins and seven consecutive heat wins, but he also knows how quickly how that lead can disappear, so don’t expect him to ease up on his fellow racers as he attempts to nail down his third straight super stock title and sixth overall in Ashland.

Every other points chase at ABC is far from decided, although last Satruday’s action gave some division leaders a bit more leverage. Superior’s Al Uotinen continues to hold a 15-point lead in the WISSOTA modified division as he attempts to win his third straight division crown, while Scott Ovaska of Marengo inched his six-cylinder points margin up to seven after collecting his ninth heat win and sixth straight top-six feature finish.

In the pure stocks Ricky Davis of Bruno, MN, extended his lead to 28 points as he, like Ovaska, seeks his first-ever points title.

In the very tight WISSOTA street stock points race, Roger Walker of Phillips has used six straight feature finishes of sixth or better - including two wins and two runner-up efforts - to edge ahead of Ironwood’s Steve Anderson by four.

In all divisions a maximum possible 57 points is available each race night, based on car counts and other contingencies.

An estimated 25-30 Midwest mods are also expected at the 3/8-mile red clay oval Saturday. Donations by area businesses have helped to make up a total payout of approximately $4,000 for the visiting division, including a $400 check for the feature winner. The event will also pay points towards the national WISSOTA standings for those drivers in attendance.

Reserved seats and tickets, as well as reserved camping sites, for the September 29-30 Red Clay Classic will be made available at the track during the August 19 and 26 race programs. Fans who currently hold reserved seats for the 2006 regular season still have first rights to their seats for the Classic, but they must claim and pay for those seats by the end of the August 19 race program; after that the seats will be made available to the general public.

Reservation information is also available by calling Mary at (715) 682-2672 from 9 am-8 pm Mondays through Fridays, or by inquiring via e-mail at abctickets06@yahoo.com

The regular season ends with Pepsi Fan Appreciation Night on Saturday, August 26, during which the 2006 track points champions will be named.

Action for each night of racing starts with hot laps at 6:15 pm, while green-flag racing begins at 7. The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. “Racenight Live” will air Saturday on WJJH, 96.7 & 102.3 FM, with up-to-date track news and weather information. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com
