ABC To Host Mod Triple-Header Saturday
by Nick Gima
Ashland, WI - The ABC Raceway will host its first special-event race program
of the season on Saturday night, June 18.
The fourth annual Modified Triple Header, presented by the Bad River Lodge
& Casino of Odanah, will feature a unique format of three complete
A-features for WISSOTA-sanctioned mods. Over 40 drivers are expected to
compete in qualifying heats and B-features to make the first 24-car main event
field, and those that make the first ³A² will compete in all three.
The first main runs for 15 laps and pays $300 to win and $50 to start. The
field is then realigned for the second feature by inverting the top eight finishers
as well as those drivers finishing ninth-16th (finishers 17-24 are aligned by
their first-race finish), and the second feature runs for 20 laps and pays
$600 to win and $60 to start.
Then the field is reset once more for the third A-main, with the drivers
aligned based on total points earned in the first two features, using WISSOTA¹s
national points system. The top eight in points earned will then be inverted
to finalize the starting line-up, and the field will run 25 laps for a $1,300
first-place check, while starting the event pays $125.
A $200 bonus will be awarded to any driver that can win any two of the three
features, while a driver that sweeps all three mod mains will collect an
additional $500, giving that driver a possible $2,700 paycheck for the night¹s
work. Just to start all three features pays a minimum of $240. In addition,
Baxter¹s Speed Shop of Dorchester will pay a $100 bonus to each heat winner
and a $50 bonus to each B-feature winner.
All told, a purse of over $15,000 is available to the modifieds in attendance.
Only the third feature, along with the heat and B-feature races, will pay
WISSOTA national points for the mods. There will be no track points awarded
for the division on this night.
In the brief history of this event, two drivers have already made their marks.
Four-time ABC Raceway points champion Jeff Spacek of Phillips has won four of
the nine features run in this event¹s history and is the only driver to sweep
all three events in one night, in 2003. Meanwhile, past national WISSOTA mod
champ Craig Thatcher of Knapp has his made rare trips to Ashland worthwhile,
as three of his five career feature wins here have been in this event (2002,
2004 twice); his other two wins are Red Clay Classic victories.
WISSOTA super stocks and the Raceway¹s six-cylinder and pure stock divisions
will also be in action in a full points-paying program.
Hot laps will begin Saturday at 6:30 pm, while the first green flag is set to
drop at 7. ³Racenight Live² will air from 5-6:30 pm Saturday on WJJH, 96.7
& 102.3 FM, with raceday news and weather updates. The ABC Raceway is
located three miles south of Ashland on Highway 13, then one mile west on
Butterworth Road. For more information, visit the track website at www.abcraceway.com
or call (715) 682-4990 for raceday information.
