Hansen In A Hurry At I-94 Raceway

By Dean Reller

(SAUK CENTRE, MN) August 23rd--Todd Hansen was in a big hurry as he took his second win of the year in the ASA Late Model Feature at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. Current points leader Trent Snyder led the field to the green, but it was Hansen who took the lead on the opening lap. Snyder stayed glued to Hansen the entire race as he sought a way around. Hansen proved unbeatable as he led all 30 laps on his way to the win.

Jon Lewerer continued his hot streak as he won a frightening Modified Feature. After a false start to the race, a bunch of cars running three-wide got together on the front stretch. Matt Anderson’s car hit the fence and then the flagstand, before tearing out another section of fence. Track Officials Tyler Schafer and Eric Peterson each suffered minor injuries, but were able to complete the racing program from a infield flagging area set up due to the extensive damage to the flagstand. After a 59 minute red flag period, to make temporary repairs to the fence, racing resumed. Dave Schafer, Brady Barker and Oren Hoeper each took turns leading, before another incident sent Brad Gillis into the wall in turn one. When the green flag waved again, Lewerer scooped up the lead and led the rest of the way to take the win.

Less than two feet, was all Jim Larkin needed to be in front and that was all he had as Larkin won the Super Stock Feature. Paul Milford led the opening lap, before Rob Dubnecay took over. Dubnecay, looking for his first win, held off Molly Rhoads for several laps before Larkin moved to second. Larkin followed Dubnecay as he tried to find a way around. Out of the final turn, it was a drag race for the win and Larkin got just the boost he needed to cross the stripe first and take the win.

It’s been several weeks, but Jon Lewerer finally returned to Victory Lane in the Great North Legends Feature. Stan Davis showed his strength early on as he set the pace. On lap five, Davis slid up the track in turn four, allowing Cory Lease to take the top spot. Lease soon had company as Lewerer was there challenging. The front two ran side-by-side and on lap seven, Lease brushed the front stretch wall, allowing Lewerer move to the lead. Once in front Lewerer moved to a slight advantage as he shot off to the win. Meanwhile, Jay "The Rocket" Rickert made a late race charge as he took second from Lease in the final few laps. Lewerer’s win coupled with his Victory in the Modifieds, added his name to the very short list of drivers that have won two features in different classes on the same night at the I-94 Raceway.

Ace Valencour came from deep in the field to win the Thunder Car Feature. Jonathan Olmscheid led the opening lap, before Jerry Messer moved by on lap two. Midway through, Pat Amelung squeezed his way past to become the new race leader. Slowly working his way towards the front was Valencour and with five laps remaining, he took the lead. Amelung didn’t give up, but he had to settle for second as Valencour ran hard on his way to the win.

Andy Heying continued his amazing season as he won the UCAR Feature. Tony Hallerman showed the way from the pole. Hallerman moved to a slight lead as Dan Bolstad ran a consistent second. Tenth starting Heying gradually worked his way through the field and with three laps left, he was right alongside his good friend Hallerman. The two raced wheel-to-wheel, before Heying completed the pass and led the final couple of laps on his way to the win.

Nathan Johanneck took his first career win in hard charging fashion in the TQ Stock Car Feature. Mike Farnum, led the first lap, before Darin Nelson took over. Sixth starting Johanneck drove hard and was soon right behind Nelson. Johanneck looked hungry for the win as he pressured Nelson. With three laps left, Johanneck made his move in turn four and took over the lead. Nelson could only chase as Johanneck tore to the win.
