Rossell Rocks At I-94 Raceway

By Dean Reller

(SAUK CENTRE, MN) August 16th--Stacy Rossell broke through for the first time this season as he won the Meilke Oil ASA Late Model Feature at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. Points leader Trent Snyder took off from the pole as he set the pace. Don Shaw followed a short distance behind in second. A pair of cautions slowed the action near the midpoint of the race, but on each restart, Snyder continued to show the way. Meanwhile, Rossell was slowly working his way up and with eight laps left, he was in second. Snyder held tough, but with three to go, he slid up the track just a bit in turn four. This gave Rossell the opportunity and he snapped up the lead. Once in front, Rossell put couple of car’s lengths between himself and Snyder as he took the win.

Since hopping behind the wheel of a Modified midway through the season, Jon Lewerer has been one tough customer and Lewerer showed his strength again as he won the Modified Feature. Terry Merten took the lead on the opening lap, but it was a short stay as Jerry Voigt shot past on lap two. Sixth starting Lewerer blasted his way to the front and on lap four, he became the new race leader. Only one caution, for debris, slowed the race and that played right into Lewerer’s strategy as he tore off on the restart and never looked back as he raced to the win.

Pat Henry made a late race charge as he won the Meilke Oil Super Stock Feature. Rob Dubnecay, in search of his first win, took command of the race from the start. Henry moved to second, with Molly Rhoads in third. The top three would stay extremely close as Henry and Rhoads raced side-by-side. Rhoads would take the spot, as she looked to make a move on Dubnecay. Henry gathered things up and on lap 12, he moved from third to first. Rhoads would also get by Dubnecay as the top three stayed right together to the very end, with Henry holding on for the Victory.

Todd Tracy has been looking for a win at I-94 Raceway for a while and in one of the closest races ever, Tracy finally took home the win in the Great North Legends Feature. Jay "The Rocket" Rickert took the lead from the pole and set a quick pace. Cory Lease got by Doug Petty for second as everyone stayed close. This allowed Tracy to move from ninth to challenge Lease briefly, before taking the spot. Rickert continued to show the way, but his lead quickly dwindled as Tracy reeled him in. With eight laps remaining it was Rickert and Tracy nose-to-tail for the lead. Tracy was able to get a good run into turn one and four times out of the last five laps, he was the leader through that corner, but each time the pair ran out of turn two, Rickert would take the lead back. The final lap saw it as anyone’s race as the lead changed hands four times on the last trip around the track. Coming off the final turn, Tracy got just enough boost to put his car in front by just a few inches to take the win in dramatic fashion.

Dirk Henry continued his strong season as he won the Meilke Oil Thunder Car Feature. Matt Miller took the lead from the start, before Jerry Messer took over shortly thereafter. Sixth starting Henry zeroed in on Messer and soon he was the new guy out front. With the lead in hand, Henry continued to drive hard, taking the win by a full straightaway over Messer.

Andy "Hot Rod" Heying drove a smooth race and came up with the win in the UCAR Feature. Sam Hanson took the lead right away as Heying quickly pulled in behind. Heying then moved alongside and was credited with the lead on lap six. Hanson wasn’t through yet as he slipped by two laps later. The front pair stayed no more than a car length apart as the race wore on. On the final turn of the final lap, Heying got just enough grip as he reclaimed the lead and sprinted to the finish line to take the win.

Darin Nelson backed up his win from a week earlier with another trip to the Winner’s Circle in the TQ Stock Car Feature. Al Jacobsen took the lead from the wave of the green as Chris Farnum jumped the start and moved to second. Jacobsen ran strong for several laps, before Farnum took the lead. Farnum ran away as he went unchallenged in the caution free race. However, he was assessed a two position penalty for his jump at the start and without a caution to impose the penalty, it was applied to the finish of the race. This gave Nelson the win, with Steve Strandlund taking second and Farnum dropping to third.

Following the races, Doug Rose in his Green Mamba Jet Car, melted a car in the infield.
