Cywinski Powers To Win At I-94 Raceway

By Dean Reller

(SAUK CENTRE, MN) August 9th--Kevin Cywinski, the current ASA Racing Series National Points leader put a brand new car through it’s paces as he won the Bernick’s Pepsi ASA Late Model Feature at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. Todd Hansen took the lead from the start. Cywinski started dead last in the 30 lap event, but it didn’t take long for him to work his way to the front. Kurt Danko brought out the second of two cautions in the race, when he tagged the backstretch wall, spun and collected Joey Miller in the process. Both cars were done for the night. Hansen controlled the restart, but had a pack of fast cars on his rear bumper. On lap 15, Cywinski took the lead from Hansen and never looked back as he cruised to the win, beating Hansen to the line by better than a full straightaway.

Oren "The Wild Child" Hoeper was in top gear as he won the Modified Feature. Hoeper jumped into the lead from the start and pulled away from the others as the race wore on. The battle for second was a heated one as Jeff Rohner held off John Notch and Jon Lewerer.

Jay "The Rocket" Rickert launched his way into the lead midway through the Bernick’s Pepsi Great North Legends Feature and that's where he stayed for the remainder, as he came home with the win. Clint VanHeel, Stan Davis and Cory Lease each took a turn leading the race. Rickert moved by Lease on lap eight to take the lead and moved to a slight lead as he completed the distance. Lease held his ground and came home with a second place run. Right behind him, Jon Lewerer, Todd Tracy and Davis followed in close quarters.

Pat Henry showed patience and that was rewarded with a win in the Super Stock Feature. DJ Dondelinger and Rob Dubnecay staged a fierce side-by-side battle in the opening laps. Henry followed close behind and when the opportunity came about, Henry worked his way past both on his way to taking the win. Molly Rhoads put on a late race rally, but ran out of time as she chased Henry to the finish line.

Tony "The Tiger" Hallerman’s dedication and hard work finally reached it’s pay day as Hallerman won his first career UCAR Feature. Jim Drager took the lead from the start as Dan Bolstad moved to second. The two leaders would make contact with each other on lap six, allowing Hallerman the chance of a lifetime. Hallerman pounced on the throttle and took over the top spot. Joe Karl charged his way through the field and came up a couple of car’s lengths short as he chased Hallerman to the win.

Pat Amelung plastered his foot to the floorboards as he won his first career Thunder Car Feature. Smoke Jackson showed his years of racing experience as he surged into the lead. Sixth starting Amelung made his presence known as he moved by Jackson to take the lead on lap three. The cautionless race played right into Amelung’s favor as he extended lead to a full straightaway by the time the checkered flag waved. Ace Valencour took second, while Shawn Robinson finished third.

Darin Nelson got the monkey off his back as he returned to Victory Lane in the TQ Stock Car Feature. Steve Strandlund led the opening laps, but contact with Chris Farnum sent his car into the turn three wall, subsequently ending his night. Nelson inherited the lead on the restart and never looked back as he pulled away from the others as he cruised to the win. Farnum worked his way back up front, but Nelson’s lead was too great to do anything with as he had to settle for second.
