Brockhouse Takes Big Pay Day At I-94 Raceway

By Dean Reller

(SAUK CENTRE, MN) August 2nd--Tim Brockhouse had a thousand reasons to be happy after his dominant win in the Restorations By Wayne, Great North Legends Feature at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. Kim Kraus led the 22 Legends cars to the start of the $1,000 to win, 30 lap race. Third starting Brockhouse blasted by to take the lead on the opening lap, as the top several cars stayed tightly bunched together. Dirk Henry brought out the only caution of the race with his spin in turn two. On the restart, Rob Thurston pulled up on Brockhouse’s bumper as he sought a way around. Brockhouse maintained his composure and led the rest of the way to take the win. Thurston took second, with Jon Lewerer and Jay Rickert right behind him. The race featured the largest payout ever the for the Great North Legends.

Todd Hansen added his name to the winners list this season as he won his first race of the year in the Bernick’s Pepsi ASA Late Model Feature. Bob White took his ride to the front in the early stages of the race, as Stacy Rossell stepped up to challenge. The pair raced side-by-side for many laps, swapping the lead numerous times, before Rossell took the spot for good. The race upfront allowed Bryan Roach to stay within striking distance and on lap 13, he took the lead. Rossell stayed close and as the duo entered turn one, they made contact, bringing out the yellow flag. When the field was reset, Hansen now occupied the lead with Trent Snyder and Gary Mueller in a hot battle just behind. Snyder and Mueller got crossed up on the front stretch, collecting Tim Olson as well in the fracas. When the green waved for the final time, Hansen’s new challenger was Rich Snyder. Snyder stayed close and closed the gap to less than a car’s length when the checkered flag waved as Hansen took the win.

Jon Lewerer has shown a lot of life the last few weeks and Lewerer continued his series of strong runs as he won the Modified Feature. Outside polesitter Oren Hoeper got things rolling as he darted into the lead. Lewerer quickly moved to second and on lap two, he became the new race leader. Hoeper mounted a challenge and four laps later, he was back in front. Lewerer returned the favor on the next lap as he retook the top spot. Jerry Voigt brought out the only caution of the race, when his engine let loose near the midpoint of the race. After a quick cleanup, John Notch now ran in second. Lewerer used the final laps to pad his lead, as he rolled on to the win.

Gordy Mason’s hard work and persistence finally were rewarded as he won for the first time in the Bernick’s Pepsi Super Stock Feature. Pat Maloney showed the way on the opening lap as he took off with the lead. Mason moved by on lap two, before Maloney looped his car in turn two, to bring out the only yellow of the race. Mason took the restart and pulled out to a slight advantage over Jim Larkin, who was racing hard with Pat Henry for second. Henry took the spot and zeroed in on Mason. Mason’s lead shrunk as Henry and Molly Rhoads closed in on the final few laps. Henry looked to make a pass, but didn’t have enough to get by as Mason crossed the line first to take the win.

Jerry Messer took advantage of late race incident and that helped to propel him to the win in the Thunder Car Feature. Messer grabbed the lead from the start as he and Shawn Robinson ran next to each other. Daryl Harth’s broken right front, caused him to stop on the track to bring out the first caution of the race. Messer soon had company upfront as Pat Amelung, Ace Valencour and Dirk Henry ran three-wide in their march toward the front. Henry suffered flat and dropped from the race, while Amelung and Valencour took the top two spots. With two laps left, Valencour took the lead. The front runners stayed side-by-side just as the white waved and as they entered turn two, they made contact. This brought out a yellow and set up a sprint to the finish. Messer now found himself back in the lead and that’s where he stayed, the rest of the way to pick up the win.

Sam Hanson has been making the occasional trip from Fergus Falls to race this season and so far has had some not so great finishes. That got turned around in a hurry as Hanson took the win in the UCAR feature. Tony Hallerman showed off his stuff as he took the lead right away. Sixth starting Hanson ran down Hallerman and then took the lead. Ben Mayers bounced his car off the wall to bring out a late caution. On the restart, Andy Heying got past Hallerman, but Hanson remained untouchable as he completed the distance to take home the win.

Chris Farnum has shown in recent weeks that he is the driver to beat as he recorded yet another win in the TQ Stock Car Feature. Steve Strandland got the jump on the field as he took his ride the lead on the opening lap. Farnum quickly made his move, as he took the lead on lap two. Once in front, Farnum ran his own race as he set the pace. Leroy Nelson had a lock on second as Darin Nelson and Strandland fought for third. Back out front, Farnum motored on to take the win, followed by Leroy Nelson, Strandland and Darin Nelson.
