Van Oudenhoven Takes Governor’s Cup At I-94 Raceway

By Dean Reller

(SAUK CENTRE, MN) July 26th--Jeff Van Oudenhoven had never seen the I-94 Raceway before, but he proved to be a quick study and even quicker on the racetrack as he won the 100 lap Yellow Book USA MARS Late Model Governor’s Cup, presented by Miller Lite. Twenty-four cars competed in the 10th annual event and pole sitter Bob Dannes took the lead from the start. Fellow front row starter Todd Hansen pulled alongside and took over on lap two. Dave Lawrence followed Hansen and took over second. The pair raced side-by-side for several laps, but Hansen maintained his lead throughout. On lap 32, Lawrence squeezed ahead while in heavy lapped traffic. Meanwhile, eleventh starting Van Oudenhoven was coming to life as he picked off cars on the bottom of the track. Van Oudenhoven moved by Hansen on lap 42 and the next lap, he drove under Lawrence and took the lead. Once in front, Van Oudenhoven pulled to a full straightaway advantage as Lawrence’s engine began to sputter.

The only caution of the event happened on lap 65, when Jamie Iverson spun in turn four. The restart saw seventh starting Ryan Mathews now in second, right behind his teammate Van Oudenhoven. When the green waved, the front pair quickly distanced themselves from the others as they ran nose-to-tail through traffic. Van Oudenhoven stretched things out in the final few laps to comfortably take the win. Mathews, the race’s defending champ, finished second, while Mark Schroeder came to life at the end to round out the top three.

The Yellow USA Super Trucks returned for another visit and Andy Jirik captured the win in the 40 lap event. John Froelich led the field to the line, but Tony Holm moved by and took charge of the race. John Vig Jr. ran down Holm and the two raced alongside one-another out front. On lap 19, the pair made contact in turn three and Vig moved by to become the new race leader. Jirik used that battle to catch up and soon was running hard with Holm for second. That race was short lived as Jirik then set his sights on Vig. With 11 laps to go, Jirik drove by Vig to take the lead. In the final few laps, Jirik stretched things out by just enough to safely claim the win.

Jon Lewerer took winning to new heights after winning the Miller Lite Modified Feature. Terry Merten showed the way early on as he took his ride to the front. Seventh starting John Notch was in a hurry as he muscled his way to the front. Notch took the lead on lap five, bringing Lewerer in his draft. The top two ran bumper-to-bumper, before Lewerer pulled off the pass with six laps left. Lewerer held his ground and kept Notch in his shadow as he completed the distance to take the win. After the race, Lewerer jumped from his car and climbed the front stretch fence to salute the fans.

Pat Henry turned in his most dominant run of the season as he won the Super Stock Feature. Henry took the lead from the start, but polesitter Molly Rhoads stayed with him. Rhoads pulled alongside a couple of times, but couldn’t make the pass. Paul Milford’s spin brought out the only yellow of the race when he spun on lap 15. When the action picked back up again, Henry snuck away to garner the win. Rhoads held off Jim Larkin to maintain a second place run.

Jay "The Rocket" Rickert launched his car on a successful mission as he shot to the win in the Great North Legends Feature. Lew Lunsman led the pack as everyone roared to life. Cory Lease took a turn in front on lap four, before Jon Lewerer took over on the next lap. The race’s only caution happened the next time around, jumbling up several cars. When the field reassembled, Rickert was the new leader, with Tim Brockhouse right behind. Brockhouse and Rickert touched bumpers several times as they led the charge up front. The contact didn’t upset either car as Rickert held on the rest of the way to touchdown in Victory Lane.

In the Thunder Car Feature, Ace Valencour’s hard work on and off the track were rewarded with a win. Daryl Harth and Pat Amelung each had a turn in the lead, before Dirk Henry came flying by, just before the half-way point of the race. Valencour caught Henry and the two raced hard, before Valenour took the lead with four laps to go. The win was a special one for Valencour, after destroying his car a few weeks ago, fellow racer Todd Maciey gave him his car and Valencour returned the favor by driving it to the win.

Several weeks ago, Joe Karl’s night ended when he rolled his car several times down the front stretch. With his car rebuilt, Karl showed the way in the UCAR feature. Marc Rosenow put his truck into the lead from the start. Slowly his ride, moved higher on the track and that opened the door for Karl to drive under and snatch the lead away. Karl walked away to a slight advantage, but that quickly disappeared as Andy Heying came on strong in the final few laps. Heying pulled to Karl’s rear bumper, but that was all he had time to do as Karl showed he was back on track as he took home the win.
