Shaw Takes Second Straight At I-94 Raceway

By Dean Reller

(SAUK CENTRE, MN) July 19th--Don Shaw backed up his win from one week earlier with another trip to Victory Lane after wining the ASA Late Model Feature at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. Things got off to a slow start as a pair of cautions in the first two laps slowed the action. When the green waved, outside pole-sitter Don Shaw outran Trent Snyder for the lead. A long green flag run allowed Shaw to pull away as Snyder had to contend with Stacy Rossell. The race for second was a side-by-side battle with Rossell gaining the spot with less than ten laps remaining. Two cautions in the final six laps bunched everyone up and gave Rossell a shot at Shaw. The final lap saw the leaders race alongside each other, but Shaw held tough and took the win by a half of a car’s length.

Oren "The Wild Child" Hoeper took his first win of the year in the Checkers Home and Lumber Warehouse Modified Series race. Jon Olson showed the way early on as he took the lead on the opening lap. Fifth starting Hoeper pushed his way through the others and soon found himself in second. Not long after that, he dove to the bottom in turn four and took the lead from Olson. Once out front, Hoeper kept on going, expanding his lead to a full straightaway. Late in the race, Jon Lewerer and John Notch worked their way towards the front, but without the aid of a caution, that’s as far as they would get as Hoeper cruised to the win. The race was the third of the four race Checkers Home and Lumber Warehouse Modified Series, in which Notch remains atop the point standings.

Bryan Roach, who has been helping Molly Rhoads all season, got behind the wheel of her car and took it to Victory Lane in the Super Stock Feature. Larry Fitzsimmons moved to the front, but he used a lot of it up as his rear brakes glowed cherry red in the first few laps. That condition allowed Jim Larkin to move past and take control up front. Meanwhile, Roach who was involved in a early incident, was coming on strong from the back of the field. Roach ran down Larkin and moved by just before Larkin’s engine let loose and dumped water all over the track. On the restart, Roach moved out and took the win as Rob Dubnecay turned in one of his best finishes with a second place run.

Fourteen year-old Andy Hansen has showed he is a driver on the way up as Hansen held off a handful of challengers in winning his first Great North Legends Feature of the season. Bruce Allen jumped into the lead from the pole, but third starting Hansen was in a hurry as he took the lead on lap two. A tangle between Rob Thurston and Jon Lewerer, brought out an early yellow. When the green flew again, Hansen had slim lead over the next four cars. Cory Lease had a handful as Jay Rickert and Tim Brockhouse made the race for second interesting. Lease would lock down the spot, but back out front, Hansen was on a roll as he took the Checkered Flag by a full straightaway.

Dirk Henry nearly drove the wheels off his car, but it paid off big as he won the Thunder Car Feature. Lance Steuve looked impressive in the early going as he set the pace out front. "Towtruck" Tim Wojtowicz ran hard in second, before Jerry Messer moved by the front pair on the same lap and became the new leader on lap seven. Messer’s stay was a short one as Henry led the freight train with Ace Valencour and Daryl Harth right behind. Valencour pulled alongside in the closing laps, but came up just short as Henry snuck off with the win.

Mike Megher was all smiles after winning his first career UCAR Feature. Megher took the lead on lap two and set a quick pace. The lead grew to as much as a full straightaway at one point, before Joe Karl and Andy Heying began to close in. The cautionless race proved to be a big advantage for Megher as Karl and Heying ran out of laps and could only watch as Megher took the win.

Chris Farnum continued his winning ways as he took another win in the TQ Stock Car Feature. Darin Nelson looked strong near the start of the race as he cranked his car to a comfortable lead. Ninth starting Farnum worked his way up quickly and soon was in second. Nelson slowed dramatically on lap eight and that was all Farnum need to scoop up the lead. Nelson would regain speed and manage to hold onto second, but that would be as far as he would get, as Farnum worked lapped traffic just right in the end on his way to taking home the win.
