Rich Snyder Takes Second Straight At I-94 Raceway
By Dean Reller
(SAUK CENTRE, MN) June 28th--Rich Snyder didn’t seem to mind a pair of rain
delays that disrupted the race program, because it was well worth the wait as
he won his second race in a row in the Schwieters Chevrolet/Oldsmobile ASA
Late Model Feature at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. Clay Montella set the
pace early on, but fifth starting Snyder was on the move and he quickly
marched toward the front, taking the lead on lap seven. Stacy Rossell stayed
with Snyder until the end, when the leader opened things up in the final few
laps as Snyder took home the win. Rossell locked-down second, while Don Shaw
in his first-ever pavement race, edged out Trent Snyder at the stripe to take
third.
A week ago, John Notch was attending a wedding and looked to have his win
streak snapped. Fortunately for him, that race program was rained-out. This
week, under damp conditions, Notch maintained his perfect record as he won the
Modified Feature. Veteran driver Terry Merten took control from outside the
front row and set a quick pace as Jeff Rohner tried to get by. This gave Notch
a little time to hunt down the leaders. Notch made his move on lap nine as he
got by both cars and took over in front of the field. With the lead in hand,
Notch spaced himself just enough to complete the distance safely over Merten
and Rohner, who finished up side-by-side at the finish line.
Jim Larkin started the season off with three straight wins, but since then he
has come up dry. Larkin showed he was back on the top of his game as he won
the Schwieters Chevrolet/Oldsmobile Super Stock Feature. Rob Dubnecay had his
car running well as he led the first eight laps. Then, Larkin moved to the
lead just after a restart on lap nine. Pat Henry rallied late in the race, but
ran out of time as he had to settle for second as Larkin rolled in with the
win.
Jay "The Rocket" Rickert has spent a lot of time lately trying to
find some more speed. "The Rocket" blasted away on a late restart
and that was what he needed as he took the win in the Great North Legends
Feature. Todd Tracy and Cory Lease set the pace in the first six laps, before
a tangle between the two wiped away both of their chances at the win. This
handed the lead over to Tim Brockhouse, who had Jon Lewerer pressuring hard
alongside. Lewerer would lose an edge, spin and then be tagged by Doug Petty,
knocking both cars out of the race. On the restart, Brockhouse jumped the
start, allowing Rickert to inherit the lead. With open track ahead, Rickert
throttled up and shot off the last couple of laps to claim the win. Stan Davis
had one of his best ever finishes as he chased a few car lengths back to
finish second.
Ace Valencour came out on top in the Thunder Car Feature. A large field of
cars took the green, with Jerry Messer grabbing the lead from the get-go.
Valencour reeled in the leader, but soon found himself spinning in turn two,
from fluid put down by the race leader. As Messer pulled to the pits,
Valencour took the lead and held off Dirk Henry on the final lap to take the
win.
Dan Bolstad has been a regular this year and that persistence paid off as he
won the UCAR Feature. Joe Karl showed the way early on, but on a restart he
and Sam Hanson made contact, resulting in Karl doing a couple of rolls, right
in front of the flagstand. Karl was uninjured, but his car was heavily
damaged. This gave the lead to Bolstad, with Cory Eckel in second. Meanwhile,
Andy Heying was steadily picking up spots as he snuck his way towards the
front. With two laps to go, it was a three car race for the lead. Coming out
of the final turn all three had a shot at the win, but Bolstad had just enough
to inch his way across the line first to take the win. Heying finished second,
while Eckel was right in the shadows to take third.
