Olson Wins In Late Models At I-94 Raceway
By Dean Reller
(SAUK CENTRE, MN) June 7th--Tim Olson has been close several times this year,
but he finally broke through and scored his first win of the year in the
Structural Buildings ASA Late Model Feature at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre.
Scott Bender and Stacy Rossell each took turns out in front. Fifth starting
Olson showed that his car was fast as he rooted his way past Jeff Lofquist on
his way to second, behind Rossell. Gary Mueller joined the fold, making it a
three-wide race for the lead. Olson powered his way by as Mueller now took
over second. The top two ran close the rest of the way as Olson stayed a
car’s length in front to score the win.
John Notch remains undefeated on the season as he won for
the sixth straight time in the Modifieds. Terry Merten looked on top of his
game as he took the lead on the opening lap. Notch came from sixth on the grid
and soon was trading paint with Merten as he sought the lead. Notch got by,
just before the midway point of the race and he opened things up at the end as
he cruised to the win. Merten turned in one of his best runs of season as he
came home second, while visiting driver Billy Johanneck from Phoenix, AZ came
from the back of the field to finish third.
Pat Maloney has turned his season in the right direction as
he won his third straight Super Stock Feature. Joe Roberts and Molly Rhoads
traded the lead in the first few trips around the track, before Maloney stuck
his nose down low and passed both cars as he took over the lead. With clear
track ahead, Maloney kept things rolling as he cruised to the win by nearly a
lap of a lap ahead of Pat Henry.
Rob Thurston returned to victory lane as he won the
Structural Buildings Great North Legends Feature. Thurston shot into the lead
on the opening lap. Jon Lewerer moved to second and the top two ran right
together the rest of the way, as Thurston held his ground and took the win.
Ace Valencour’s last lap move made the difference as
Valencour took the win in the Thunder Car Feature. Pat Amelung looked to be on
his way to his first career win, but Valencour was on a mission as he pulled
alongside in the last few laps. With the white flag in sight, Valencour made
his move down low and moved ahead and stayed there the rest of the way for the
win.
Andy Heying had the right setup and that allowed him to
visit the winner circle in the UCAR Feature. Kris Wensman and Marc Rosenow
each had some time in the lead, before Heying took over on lap six. Heying
stayed away from the several incidents that plagued the race and finished the
distance to take the win. Adam Fronning ran well to finish second, while Rick
Third finished coincidentally in third.
Mike Farnum was jumping for joy as he celebrated his first
career win in the TQ Stock Car Feature. Steve Strandland moved past Jake
Lofgren in the first few laps, giving Strandland a shot at his first career
win. Farnum caught up with Strandland and then pulled off the pass in turn
two, with three laps left. Strandland stayed close, but was Farnum who came
out on top.
