Snyder Does It Again At I-94 Raceway

By Dean Reller

SAUK CENTRE, MN) May 31st--For the second time this season, Trent Snyder turned in a stellar performance as he took home the top prize in the K95 Radio/ American Business Forms ASA Late Model Feature at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. Outside pole sitter Stacy Rossell, who was celebrating his first wedding anniversary, took the lead from the start. Nineteen-year-old Snyder started third, but quickly zeroed in on Rossell as he took his DMD Pharmaceuticals / Milaca Unclaimed Freight car to the lead on lap four. The 30 lap race ran without a caution, allowing Snyder to build up a substantial lead. Tim Olson had a good run as he chased Snyder in second, but with clear track ahead, Snyder motored on to take the win and solidify his place atop the Late Model Point Standings.

John Notch continued his dominate season as he won the Checkers Home & Lumber Modified Challenge Series Feature. This was the first race of a four race series between I-94 Raceway and it’s sister track, Fergus Falls Raceway. The top drivers in this series will split a $2,000 Points Fund. Al Stewart looked to have things dialed-in as he jumped into the lead. Terry Merten raced Stewart hard, before taking the lead on lap seven. That two-wide race for the lead gave Notch a little time to weave through the field and on lap 11, he took Merten on the high side to capture the lead. Once in front, Notch moved into his familiar groove as he completed the distance and maintained his perfect record.

After a disastrous start to the season, Pat Maloney has turned things around as he won his second straight Super Stock Feature. Dave Deters poked his car into the lead at the start, but by the time the first lap was in the books, third starting Maloney was in the lead. Maloney blasted away with the top spot, but he saw that washed away when Rob Dubnecay, bought out a caution when he hit the turn two wall. Maloney handily grabbed the restart, but a couple of laps later, Deters had something break as he exited turn four, and he bounced off the wall and then collected Gordy Mason as he slid across the front stretch. Both drivers were OK, but their night was over. In the short dash to the finish, Maloney held off Jim Larkin’s late race surge as he took the checkered flag.

Jon Lewerer took last week off to attend a wedding, but he was back in the saddle as he won the K95 Radio/ American Business Forms Great North Legends Feature. Todd Tracy set the pace as 21 cars roared to life. Eighth starting Lewerer planted his car on the bottom, allowing him to get by Tracy on lap four. A series of cautions kept things tight, giving Rob Thurston the opportunity to run right next to Lewerer for the lead. Thurston edged ahead on lap 14, but Lewerer came storming back as he reclaimed the lead on the following lap. A couple more cautions late in the race, kept things interesting, but Lewerer had just a little bit more as he crossed the line by less than a car’s length ahead of Thurston.

Dirk Henry matched his car number in wins as he took his third straight in the Thunder Car Feature. Henry got by Dayrl Harth on lap two and Henry was off to the races the rest of the way as he disposed of everyone else, completing the cautionless race with a full straightaway advantage. Jerry Messer out ran Ace Valencour in the wheel-to-wheel race for second.

With a new power plant under the hood, Andy Heying ran a strong race as he won the UCAR Feature. Heying took the lead from Joe Karl on the race’s second lap and Heying kept his car there the rest of the way as he took the win. Rick Third out did his last name as he finished second, while Tony "The Tiger" Hallerman drove a good race to finish third.

Lapped traffic played a big part in the finish as Al Jacobsen won the TQ Stock Car Feature. Steve Strandland and Chris Farnum both took turns in front, before Darin Nelson took over, just past half-way. Nelson’s lead was erased with three laps remaining as a lapped car, turned down just as Nelson was committed to pass down low. The two cars got out of shape, but continued on, without a caution. This fracas allowed Jacobsen to dodge the carnage, take the lead and complete the last few laps to score the win.
