Snyder Sets The Pace At I-94 Raceway
By Dean Reller
(SAUK CENTRE, MN) May 17th--Trent Snyder got the jump early and that set the tone as he dominated the field in winning the Bernick’s Pepsi ASA Late Model Feature at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. Starting from outside the front row, Snyder claimed the lead right away extending his margin to a full straightaway over Eugene Dick. A late race caution however, bunched the field and gave Dick a shot at the lead. With two laps to go, Dick made a run on the low side, but Snyder held his ground and held off his challenges to take the win.
John Notch continued his incredible season as he won the Modified Feature. Terry Merten turned in a strong run as he led the first half of the race. Meanwhile, Notch was coming in a hurry from his 11th starting spot. Notch battled briefly with Merten as he took over in front with six laps to go. Merten’s quick run ended shortly thereafter as he engine blew, dumping fluid all over the track. In the short dash to the finish, Notch scooted away from Jerry Voigt to take his third straight win.
After finding Victory Lane for the first time on opening night, Jim Larkin has been perfect ever since as he won the Super Stock Feature. Larkin took the lead on lap one, but Pat Henry managed to squeeze by and took the spot for a couple of laps, before Larkin reclaimed the spot. Molly Rhoads worked her way from the back and with for to go, she moved to second. In the final few laps the lead margin shrank as Rhoads cut the distance, but Larkin had enough space to hang on for the win.
John Lewerer worked lapped traffic just right at he won the Bernick’s Pepsi Great North Legends Feature. Fourteen year-old Andy Hansen set the pace, from the drop of the green flag. Tenth starting Lewerer flew threw the pack and was quickly in second. The two leaders touched briefly on lap four, but both were able to maintain control as the rest of the lead pack closed up. Hansen kept Lewerer at bay, but a clump of lapped cars made things interesting with a handful of laps remaining. Lewerer weaved his way through, getting by Hansen in the process to snarl the lead. Hansen stayed close, but couldn’t make a challenge as Lewerer rolled on to the win.
Dirk Henry made his move early and it paid off as he won the Thunder Car Feature. Three-wide racing gave Dayrl Harth the early lead, but Henry poked his way through to take command on lap three. Henry opened things up as he extended his lead to a full straightaway over Ace Valencour to take the win.
After a rained-out Feature last week, two UCAR Features were on tap and Andy Heying pulled off the double as he won both races. In the first event, Heying moved by Tony Hallerman and took off to a sizeable lead. Late in the race, Rick Third gained momentum, but ran out of time as he chased Heying to the win. In the second Feature, Heying started on the pole and that spelt trouble for the others as he took his speedy ride to the front. Rick Third replayed things from the first Feature as he tailed Heying again as the front pair mirrored their finish, with Heying on top.
Darin Nelson made his first trip to Victory Lane as he won the TQ Stock Car Feature. Nelson took the lead on the opening lap and dueled with Al Jacobsen throughout most of the race. Jacobsen couldn’t get by however as Nelson cruised to the win.
