Notch Shows The Way At I-94 Raceway
By Dean Reller
(SAUK CENTRE, MN) May 10th--Over the last year, John Notch has proven to be a power house behind the wheel and on a gloomy, damp night, Notch brightened things up as he won for the second straight week in the Modified Feature at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. Al Stewart got the jump on things as he quickly darted into the lead. Terry Merten sliced and diced in second, before taking over up front. Meanwhile, Notch was pecking his way through the crowd and shortly after Merten took the lead, Notch dove under and took it away. Merten slid back late in the race as Notch seem to get stronger as he took the win comfortably over Oren Hoeper.
Jim Larkin backed up his first ever Feature win with his second Super Stock Win in a row. Greg Bieber made the most of his front row starting spot as he took the lead, holding off Rob Dubnecay through the first half of the race. Larkin gained momentum and ran down the leaders. With seven laps remaining, Larkin powered his way past and held off Bieber to garner the win.
Jon Lewerer has started the season with a bang as he topped a large field of cars in the Legends Feature. Ed Velardi took the lead as cars ran three-wide on the opening lap. Those kind of conditions spelt trouble however and Clint VanHeel found out the hard way as he tangled with another car in turn three. VanHeel’s car went air borne for a few feet and barrel rolled a couple of times before coming to a rest. VanHeel emerged uninjured and the remainder of the race ran without any further cautions. Eleventh starting Lewerer saw an opening on the restart and he put his car on the bottom as he lay claim to the lead. Todd Tracy and Rob Thurston pulled to Lewerer’s bumper late in the race, but neither could make a pass as Lewerer took home the win.
Leroy Nelson took his first win late in the year last season, but this year he got the jump on things as he won the TQ Stock Car Feature. Darin Nelson set a quick pace early on, but Al Jacobsen planted himself firmly on Nelson’s tail. The front pair jockeyed around for several laps until the two made contact in turn one, sending them both to the back of the pack. This handed the lead to Leroy Nelson, who made the most of it, as Jacobsen and Darin Nelson zeroed in during the final few laps. Darin Nelson pushed things a little too much as his spin with two laps remaining wiped out his chances. Jacobsen gave it his all, but could only pull along side Leroy Nelson as they crossed the finish line allowing Nelson to hang on for the win.
A light drizzle turned to a steady rain, forcing I-94 Raceway Officials to cut the program short. This resulted in the cancellation of the Late Model, Thunder Car and UCAR Features.
