K.J. Skelton takes Race Of Champions and Season Championship

Beaver Dam, WI - K.J. Skelton led the entire Race Of Champions to pick up the win Saturday September 28th at The Raceway at Powercom Park. The win capped an excellent season for Skelton as he edged out Troy Hepfner in the season standings to pick up the crown for the second season in a row.

The MSA Race of Champions featured the ten feature winners from the 2002 season plus the next two in season points, the field drew numbers for the starting grid. Skelton started on the pole after notching a Feature win this season, Hepfner had three feature wins drawing the second spot.

Lance Fassbender won the last Feature of the season, and started third. Jerry Ski picked the fourth spot with a Feature win. In the third row was Doug Schenck with his three Feature wins, and Kurt Davis with seven A-Main trophies.

The fourth row was Danny Schlafer with a Feature win, and David O'Neal with his three Feature wins. The fifth row was Troy Wondra with two A-Main checkers, and Joe Wipperfurth with his first MSA Feature win. Rounding out the field was Frank Firari and Tim Haddy.

The Race of Champions got to an exciting start as Skelton and Hepfner fought wing to wing on the opening lap, Skelton edged out the early lead. After a lap two red for Doug Schenck getting on his side, the yellow waved again a lap later as Hepfner parked sideways in turn four, collecting Davis with no where to go, Davis suffered race ending damage.

With the return to action, Skelton would go unchallenged to claim the title of Champion Of Champions, Fassbender followed in second, and O'Neal advanced to finish third. Wipperfurth claimed KSE Hard Charger honors advancing six spots to finish foruth. Wondra, Hepfner, Firari, Ski, Schlafer and Haddy capped the top ten in that order.

The race wrapped up the 2002 season that fielded an average of 35.9 cars and 60 different drivers over 23 events at 10 different venues. Five events fielded 40 or more cars, with a new club record of 44 cars at one event.
