Lance Fassbender Wins Final 2002 MSA Feature, K.J. Skelton On Top In Points
Saturday, September 21, 2002
by Jay Ohman
Beaver Dam, WI - Lance Fassbender broke a two year dry spell picking up
the Midwest Sprintcar Association Feature win Saturday, September 21st
at The Raceway at Powercom Park to close out the regular MSA 2002
season. K.J Skelton claimed the 2002 MSA championship crown for the
second year in a row.
Fassbender jumped out to a sizable lead in the Feature, only have to it
erased on the ninth lap with the yellow flag waving. On the return to
green, Fassbender continued with his lead while Erfurth worked his way
up to the second spot and was on the Fassbender's rear bumper when the
yellow waved again on lap 16.
Tim Haddy tumbled into turn one on the restart bringing out the red
flag, Haddy was not injured. With the return to action, Erfurth charged
hard on Fassbender in a battle for the lead, but the red flag waved
again a lap later as Mark Wernes got upside down in turn two.
That checkered the race due to curfew giving Fassbender the win and
Erfurth had to settle for second. Michael Emme and Al Schlafer each had
a good run to finish third and fourth, and Jerry Ski had picked his way
up to finish fifth.
Skelton advanced to finish sixth, Chris Wiser held on to seventh and
Doug Schenck was eighth. Jeremie Hedrick advanced eight spots to claim
ninth and the Hard Charger Award, and Troy Wondra rounded out the top
ten.
In the Triton Trailers B-Main, Jeremie Hedrick prevailed after several
laps of wheel to wheel action with Danny Schlafer to notch the win,
Schlafer finished second. Troy Hepfner, Keith Olejnik, Dan Duffield and
Jeff Fritz capped the top six transferring to the Feature.
In the Hepfner Race Products first heat, Skelton battled past Jay
Schneider on the final lap to pick up his sixth Heat win of the year.
The second heat sponsored by JB Enterprises had Lance Fassbender
checking out on the field for the win, Troy Wondra followed in second.
Andy Hunt had a comfortable lead to take the checkers in the MPD third
heat, Chris Wiser placed second. The B & B Oval Track Products
sponsored fourth heat had Dean Erfurth taking the win with Michael Emme
in tow.
The Wisconsin PC Fast Time Award went to Jeremie Hedrick with a fast lap
of 14.004. Next week, the MSA Race Of Champions will be held during the
World Of Outlaw Gumout Series on Saturday, September 28th featuring all
2002 MSA Feature race winners.
