Saturday, August 24, 2002
by Jay Ohman
Beaver Dam, WI - Troy Wondra scored his second consecutive Saturday night
Midwest Sprintcar Association Feature win at The Raceway at Powercom Park August
24th. K.J. Skelton's lead slipped to 37 points over Troy Hepfner with just two
points shows left in the season.
In the Feature, Jay Schneider jumped out to the early lead, but with six laps in
Wondra slipped by in a two lap battle for the lead. With fifteen laps in the
books, Frank Firari had advanced to the second spot, with Schneider and Jeremie
Hedrick in tow.
The red flag brought the action to a halt as Hedrick tangled hard with the turn
one wall on the eighteenth lap, Hedrick was not injured. With the return to
green, Hepfner quickly picked his way up to the second spot when the yellow
waved for the last time with two laps to go in the 25 lap race.
It was Wondra taking the green white checker laps, marking his second
consecutive Feature win at The Raceway at Powercom Park. Hepnfer followed in
second and took KSE Hard Charger honors advancing nine spots. Firari would
settle for third, Tim Haddy held on to fourth and David O'Neal advanced well to
round out the top five.
Jerry Ski worked his way up to finish sixth and Skelton took seventh. Lance
Fassbender followed in eight, J.J. Stefan and John Sauermilch Jr. capped the top
ten.
In the Triton Trailers B-Main, Danny Schlafer won from his pole starting
position, Chris Wiser placed second. T.J. Luedke, Joe Wipperfurth, Bill Taylor
and Andy Hunt capped the top six transferring to the Feature.
In the Hepfner Race Products first heat, Doug Schenck battled by Wondra to pick
up the checker, Wondra followed in second. The second heat sponsored by JB
Enterprises had Ski leading every lap for the win, Firari placed second.
In the MPD third heat, Schneider led until the last lap when Dean Erfurth and
Hepfner freight-trained by for the top two spots. Hedrick notched another Heat
win in the B & B Oval Track Products sponsored fourth heat, O'Neal settled for
second.
