Troy Wondra On Top In MSA Feature
Saturday, August 17, 2002
by Barry Arbogast and Jay Ohman
Beaver Dam, WI - Halfway through the Midwest Sprintcar Association
Feature, Troy Wondra slipped by Todd Lehr to collect his first A-Main
checker of the season. Points leader K.J. Skelton improved his margin
in the season points chase over Troy Hepfner.
With drop of the green in the MSA Feature, Joe Wipperfurth darted out
from the front row with Danny Schlafer and Todd Lehr in tow. With a lap
in the books, Lehr made a breath taking pass diving under both
Wipperfurth and Danny Schlafer for the lead.
With the field pounding hard through the rutted conditions, the front
left tire of Danny Schlafer broke off and went bouncing up to the turn 3
wall, eventually bouncing off several of the cars slowing for the
caution and at one point lodging itself on top of the hood of Frank
Firari.
With the return to action, Lehr rocketed away from the field with Wondra
keeping within reach. Lehr's lead was erased after a tenth lap yellow,
with Wondra still running second and Dean Erfurth had worked his way up
to third.
Lehr again took off with the return to green, but this time with Wondra
and Erfurth in tow, three laps later Lehr's car went sideways on him
giving Wondra the opportunity he was waiting for. Wondra would be
challenged several times by Lehr, but Lehr was unable to get his car to
stick as Wondra would go on to notch his first Feature win of the season
and marking his third in as many seasons with the MSA.
Lehr settled for the second spot and Erfurth would place third. Skelton
had worked his way up to finish second, and Jerry Ski picked up the KSE
Hard Charger title advancing fifteen spots to finish fifth. Tim Haddy
advanced to finish sixth and Keith Olejnik slipped to finish seventh.
Joe Wipperfruth, Al Schlafer and Paul Geib rounded out the top ten
finishers.
The first of two Triton Trailers B-Mains, was green to checker Michael
Emme, Paul Geib followed in second and Andy Hunt capped the top three
transferring to the Feature. In the second B-Main, Kurt Davis worked
past Jerry Ski for the win with Lance Fassbender holding off Troy
Hepfner for the final transfer spot.
The Hepfner Race Products first heat was all J.J. Stefan, Wipperfurth
followed in second. In the second heat sponsored by JB Enterprises Dean
Erfurth made a last lap pass on Al Schlafer for the win.
In the MPD third heat Danny Schlafer worked by K.J. Skelton for the
win. David O'Neal led green to checker in the B & B Oval Track Products
sponsored fourth heat, Doug Schenck followed in second. The Wisconsin
PC Fast Time Award went to Doug Schenck with a fast lap of 13.469.
