Kurt Davis Sweeps Weekend With Win at Angel Park Speedway
Sunday, July 28, 2002
by George Bauman
Sun Prairie, WI - The MSA sprint cars competed for the first time at historic
Angel Park Speedway and provided the fans with plenty of close racing. Kurt
Davis extended his A-Main winning streak to three with a late race pass of
rookie Jeremie Hedrick.
Hedrick, a rookie campaigner with MSA, controled the early laps from his pole
starting position with Angel Park veteran Dean Erfurth in chase. However, the
race was stopped when Jason Stefan flipped his mount in turn two on the second
lap.
When the green flag waved again, Erfurth wasted little time in moving to the
front and quickly built what appeared to be a comfortable lead.
Meanwhile, Davis and Troy Hepfner were moving towards the front with points
leader K.J. Skelton not far behind. Without qualifying, the races were lined up
with the current point standings, meaning Hepfner and Skelton were in row six.
Chad Deselle, another Angel Park regular in his midget was moving forward until
a turn four incident resulted in damage to the front of his car. As Deselle
entered turn one starting lap eleven, his car spun out of control collecting
Bill Taylor and bringing out another caution.
When action continued Erfurth again dominated, but on lap twenty his car spun
after his left front tire caught the inside retaining wall resulting in a spin.
Again Hedrick would be the leader but the two-time series champion Davis was in
second waiting his opportunity. On the start of lap twenty-three Davis drove
past Hedrick and a lap later the race was yellow/checkered after a spin on the
front straight-away stopped action and the 10 PM time deadline had arrived.
For Davis it was his 7th A-Main win of the season and the 25th since the series
began in 1996. Hedrick finished second ahead of Hepfner, Doug Schenck and Todd
Lehr. Skelton finished in sixth place.
Lance Fassbender won the B-Main from his pole starting position with Chris Wiser
close behind. Heat race winners were Danny Schalfer, Lehr, Erfurth and Hedrick.
No qualifying took place. MSA will compete at Plymouth Saturday night August
3rd in conjunction the EWSCA.
