Kurt Davis Prevails in MSA Feature at Raceway at Powercom Park
Saturday, July 20, 2002
by Jay Ohman
Beaver Dam, WI - Kurt Davis prevailed in a spirited battle with K.J.
Skelton to win the Midwest Sprintcar Association Feature event July 20th
at The Raceway at Powercom Park. Skelton continue to hold his lead over
Troy Hepfner in the points chase.
Danny Schlafer jumped out to the early lead with Skelton and David
O'Neal in tow in very fast action on the tacky track. Skelton slipped
by Danny Schlafer to take the lead on the sixth lap as the leaders
started picking through lapped traffic. Half-way throughy the 25 lap
race, disaster struck Danny Schlafer as both his mount and that of CJ
Wagner barrel rolled into turn two bringing out the red flag.
With the return to action, Skelton lead the charge with Davis firmly on
his rear bumper, O'Neal was holding down third followed by Lance
Fassbender and Troy Hepfner. Davis finally slipped by Skelton a couple
laps later, only to lose the point to Skelton again with 18 laps in the
books.
With three laps to go, Davis battled by Skelton for the final time to
take his fifth MSA Feature checkered flag of the season, Skelton had to
settle for second. Hepfner had worked his way up finish third, O'Neal
notched fourth and Todd Lehr placed fifth.
Troy Wondra advanced well to finish sixth, and Dean Erfurth notched KSE
Hard Charger honors advancing twelve spots to take seventh. Fassbender
slipped to finish eighth, Chris Wiser placed ninth and T.J. Luedke
rounded out the top ten.
In the first of two Triton Trailers B-Mains, Troy Wondra checked out on
the field to claim the checker, Dean Erfurth came from deep in the field
to place second, and Al Schlafer rounded out the top three transfering
to the Feature. In the second B-Main, Jay Schneider had jumped out to a
nice lead but tumbled into the turn 4 wall after tangling with a lapped
car. That put Scott Conger on the point to take the win, CJ Wagner
battled for the second spot, with Aaron Schipper hanging on to third.
In the Hepfner Race Products first heat, Michael Emme lost the lead with
one lap to go due to engine failure, that gave K.J. Skelton the win with
Frank Firari in second. The second heat sponsored by JB Enterprises had
Keith Olejnik taking the win after early race leader Paul Geib lost a
side board off of his wing, Chad DeSelle followed in a close second.
In the MPD third heat, Troy Hepfner worked past John Sauermilch Jr. for
the win with Sauermilch holding on to second. Todd Lehr jumped out from
his front row starting spot to claim the checker in the B & B Oval Track
Products sponsored fourth heat holding off Kurt Davis.
Doug Schenck picked up the Wisconsin PC Fast Time Award with a fast lap
of 13.272.
Next week is a double-header for the MSA, starting with Saturday July
27th at the Raceway at Powercom Park. Then on Sunday July 28th, the MSA
heads for the first time ever to Angel Park Speedway in an appearance
with the Badger Midgets. For all of the latest standings, results,
