Troy Hepfner Makes It Two In A Row
Saturday, June 15th, 2002 - by Jay Ohman
Beaver Dam, WI - For the second week in a row, Troy Hepfner appeared in
Victory Lane, winning the Midwest Sprintcar Association Feature at The
Raceway at Powercom Park Saturday June 15, 2002. Defending points
champion K.J. Skelton improved his lead over David O'Neal in the 2002
season points chase.
Dean Erfurth seized the early from his front row starting spot in the
Sheppy's Auto Body sponsored event, quickly opening up an eight car lead
over pole sitter Chris Wiser. The only yellow flag of the race waved on
the fourth lap as O'Neals' car had suffered race ending damage.
With the return to green, Erfurth again pulled away from the field. But
Hepfner was moving up from his fifth row starting spot with Michael Emme
close behind. By the eleventh lap, Erfurth was moving into lapped
traffic, Hepfner was quickly picking his way through the field.
With 15 laps in the books, Hepfner had caught up to Erfurth and rocketed
past for the lead, Erfurth pulled into the infield with car problems a
lap later. Hepfner had opened up a straightaway lead as the checker
flags waved, Emme had advanced with a nice run to claim second. Wiser
slipped to the third spot, Skelton held on to finish fourth, and Troy
Wondra moved up to round out the top five.
Chad Deselle gained a spot to finish sixth, Jim Uttech Sr. finished
seventh, and Doug Schenck moved up to eighth. Danny Schlafer and Frank
Firari rounded out the top ten. Lance Fassbender took the KSE Hard
Charger award, advancing 10 spots to finish twelfth.
In the first of the 15 lap B-Mains, it was all Schenck with Paul Geib
following in second and Dan Uttech moving up to the third and final
transfer spot. The second B-Main was was green to checker Todd Lehr,
Kenjay Fiedler and Fassbender rounded out the top three spots.
In the Hepfner Race Products first heat, John Fahl was first to the
checker, Jim Uttech Sr. finished second. Tim Haddy notched the win in
the JB Enterprises second heat, Skelton followed in second.
Erfurth slipped by Scott Conger for the MPD third Heat win, Conger held
on to second. In the fourth heat sponsored by B & B Oval Track
Products, Wondra made a last lap pass to take the checkers over Wiser.
O'Neal took home The Wisconsin PC Fast Time Award with a fast lap of
14.255. For all of the latest standings, results, pictures and more,
