Troy Hepfner wins wild Powercom Park Feature
Saturday, June 8th, 2002 - by Jay Ohman
Beaver Dam, WI - Troy Hepfner became the fourth Feature winner in as
many events Saturday June 8th at The Raceway at Powercom Park edging out
Danny Schlafer in an action packed run. K.J. Skelton maintained his
narrow points chase lead over David O'Neal in the Hi-Tech Communications
sponsored event.
The red flag waved on the opening lap of the Feature as Rookie Jermie
Hedrick tangled with John Fahl sending both cars tumbling down the
backstretch, neither driver was injured. With the full restart, Tim
Haddy jumped out to the early lead only to surrender the point to Danny
Schlafer. Hepfner followed past Haddy and went to work on Danny
Schlafer prevailing in a two lap wing to wing battle with Danny
Schlafer.
The race went solid green for the distance as Hepfner was quickly into
lapped traffic with Danny Schlafer in tow. With eight laps to go, Danny
Schlafer had worked back up to within two car lengths of Hepfner, but
lapped traffic would play a factor as Hepfner was able to put some
distance on Danny Schlafer.
Hepfner went on to take the checker flag, Danny Schlafer followed in
second by about six car-lengths. Behind the top two spots, several
exciting battles had taken shape. Kurt Davis fought his way up through
the field, finally getting past Skelton in the final lap to take the
third spot, Skelton would settle for fourth.
O'Neal and Troy Wondra picked their way forward for the fifth and sixth
spot, Haddy slipped to the seventh. Todd Lehr finihsed eighth
prevailing over Michael Emme and Lance Fassbender, Emme and Fassbender
rounded out the top ten.
In the first of the twin 15 lap B-Mains, T.J. Luedtke took the lead on
the second lap and never looked back for the win. Al Schlafer and Lloyd
Dykstra rounded out the top three spots transferring to the rear of the
A-Main. The second B-Main was green to checker Chris Wiser, Frank
Firari finished second and Jay Schneider was third.
The Hepfner Race Products first heat was green to checker Emme, Hepfner
finished second. Haddy sprinted from his front row starting spot to win
the second heat sponsored by JB Enterprises, Skelton followed in second.
The MPD third Heat was an exciting 10 lap battle between Andy Hunt,
Jeremie Hedrick and then Davis entering the fray. At the end it was
Hunt picking up the checker over Davis. Danny Schlafer ran off with the
win with Wondra taking second in the B & B Oval Track Products fourth
heat.
Wondra picked up the The Wisconsin PC Fast Time Award logging a fast lap
of 14.823. For all of the latest standings, results, pictures and more,
