Doug Schenck battles to MSA Feature win

Saturday, June 1st, 2002 - by Jay Ohman

Beaver Dam, WI - Doug Schenck claimed the Midwest Sprintcar Association Feature checker Saturday June 1st at The Raceway at Powercom Park in a exciting battle. The win puts Schenck a close second in the early points chase, right behind defending champion K.J. Skelton.

The Feature got off to a rough start as pole sitter John Sauermilch misjudged the slick track conditions and put his car sideways into turn one on the opening lap. The resulting melee parked six cars next him, with five cars unable to return for the restart.

Schenck jumped out from the reshuffled pole position with Dean Ehrfurth in tow and John Fahl close behind. Ehrfurth then Troy Hepfner slipped past Schenck with two laps in with a close battle between the top three cars.

Disaster struck Ehrfurth with six laps in as his front left tire broke off and bounced down the turn two and backstretch wall bringing out the only yellow flag of the race. The restart put Hepfner on the point with Schenck running second and Frank Firari up to third.

With the return to action, Hepfner was into lapped traffic on lap 11 with Schenck and Firari close behind in a wild battle for the top three spots. Lapped traffic would be a factor as Schenck slipped by Hepfner with eight laps to go. Firari would challenge Hepfner, then Hepfner would make a run on Schenck, but it was Schenck who would pick up his second career MSA feature checker.

Hepfner finished second picking up KSE Hard Charger honors advancing 18 positions, and Lucky Duck award after picking up 10 total row starting positions from the B and A-Main rough starts. Firari took a close third, Skelton had picked his way forward to finish fourth, and David O'Neal had a great run moving up to fifth after restarting at the rear.

J.J. Stefan had his best ever MSA run from the last row to finish sixth, Tim Haddy moved up to the seventh spot, and Lance Fassbender held on to eighth. After taking a season off, Andy Glewen was back in style to claim the ninth spot, and Fahl would record his best MSA finish to round out the top ten.

In the first of two 15 lap B-Mains, Glewen jumped out from his front row spot for the win. Pole sitter Keith Olejnik finished second, and Andy Hunt picked his way forward from deep in the field to claim the third and final transfer spot.

In the second B-Main, The red flag waved on the first lap as Bill Wojahn pitched sideways deep into turn 3, collecting Dan Duffield with no where to go. Fighting against time restraints, Ehrfurth picked up the checker, Hepfner advanced from the last row to claim second, and Stefan held on to third with a time shortened seven lap race.

Jerry Ski jumped out from his front row starting spot to claim the win in the Hepfner Race Products first heat, Firari followed in second. The JB Enterprises sponsored second heat was green to checker Troy Wondra with Danny Schlafer right behind.

Todd Lehr notched the win passing early leader Stefan in the MPD third Heat. In The B & B Oval Track Products sponsored fourth heat, Kurt Davis picked up the win with Joe Wipperfurth runner-up.

For the second event in a row, The Wisconsin PC Fast Time Award went to Chris Wiser with a fast lap of 13.792. The MSA takes on it's first of three triple-header weekends next week, leading off Friday June 7th with a first ever appearance at Fox Ridge Speedway in Arcadia, Wisconsin.

The Raceway at Powercom Park will be the host for the MSA on Saturday the 8th. Then on Sunday June 9th the MSA will make a special appearance with the Badger Midgets at the BMARA home track Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.
