Kreutz Crushes EWSC Mod Action at Manty Expo! - Dippel Extends LLM Point Lead!
By Sheila Karstaedt
September 1, 2002
Manitowoc, WI - On a perfect night for racing, Billy Kreutz, Kiel, won the 30 lap EWSC Winged Super Modified A-Main at the Manitowoc Expo
Speedway. Sheboygan’s Dan Dippel extended his points lead with a Limited Late
Model feature win. Ben Schmidt, Kiel, took home the checkers in the 20 lap Super Stock
feature while Jeremy Sauter, Sheboygan Falls, won the 20 lap All-American Mighty 4
feature. Joe’s Diner, Manitowoc, sponsored the racing night.
Oostburg’s Brian Portschy took the early lead of the mod A-Main. The field was
slowed down on lap one for the car of Leroy Ostrowski, Milwaukee, coming in contact
with the guardrail in turn one. After a slight delay to repair the damage, Portschy
reset the pace until lap 10 when Waldo’s Lee Moh’s found himself upside down in his
ride in turn one. Once again, Portschy set the pace on the restart until Kreutz took control
on lap 17.
The yellow came out on lap 19 for the car of Tony Wondra, West Bend, spinning
in turn one. One circuit later, it flew again for the car of points leader Paul
Pokorski, West Bend. Pokorski retired to the pits after sustaining front end damage after
an altercation with Cascade’s Barry Maas.
Kreutz maneuvered his way through lapped traffic to victory lane being chased by
Tim Melis, Plymouth, Sheboygan Falls’ KenJay Fiedler, Gary Laack, Glenbeulah, and
Maas.
The Tuschl Septic Systems Hard Charger Award went to Cedar Grove’s Billy
Hafemann, driving for Butch Hafemann, for passing 14 cars.
The 15 lap B-Main saw Pokorski power out to the lead and weaving his way
through lapped traffic by lap nine. The pack was slowed down on lap 11 for the car of
Ben Schmidt, Cedar Grove, stopping on the track in turn two. Pokorski led on the restart
until turn four when Ostrowski took over.
Plymouth’s Wayne Goetsch brought out the final caution of the race for stopping
in turn two on lap 12. Ostrowski was chased to the line by Pokorski, Chuck Tuschl,
Whitelaw, Manitowoc’s Kris Hansen, and Wondra.
The LLM feature saw Dave Haag get the jump to take the lead. The field was
slowed down on lap one for about half of the field getting together. After getting the
wreck cleaned up, Haag set the pace, being hounded by Dick Hed, Sheboygan. On lap
two, Haag and Hed were door to door until lap three when Hed took the reins. Points
leader, Dippel and Oostburg’s JJ Walvoord were charging hard to the front.
Lap eight saw the yellow once again for several cars getting together in turn two.
Walvoord also stopped on the track in turn four and retired to the pits with mechanical
problems. Hed continued to set the pace until lap 10. Dippel and Hed were side by side
for the next three circuits. Dippel took control on lap 14 only to be slowed down on lap
20 for a car stopping in turn three. Dippel finished ahead of Hed, Mark Zimmermann,
Kohler, Campbellsport’s Rick Thompson, and Jim Schmidt, Cleveland.
The Bob Akright Memorial Hard Charger Award was coveted by Dippel for passing the entire field.
Plymouth’s Ben Schmidt jumped out to the lead in the 20 lap Super Stock feature.
Several cars brought out the caution on lap four after getting together in turn two.
Brian Goetsch, Sheboygan, brought out the yellow flag on laps 11 and 17 for spinning
out. Schmidt continued to set the pace to the finish line in front of Kiel’s Dean Horneck,
Dale Damrow, Sheboygan, Doug Teunissen, Sheboygan Falls, and Plymouth’s Donny Kulow.
The Hard Charger Award went to Doug Teunissen for passing 11 cars.
Don Maquissee, Kiel took the lead in the 15 lap Super Stock semi-feature.
Plymouth’s Kyle Odekirk brought out the yellow on lap two. After getting the field reset,
the red flag came out for the cars of Jamie Theobald, Sheboygan, and Kewaskum’s Dave
Holm getting together and sending Holm flipping on lap three.
Josh Gierke, Kiel, took the lead on lap four until lap seven when Elkhart Lake’s
Bradley Ruh took over. The yellow came out for the last time on lap eight for the
spinning car of Gierke in turn three. With the time limit now being reached, the race went
green, white, checkered. Ruh held on for the win followed by Luke Scholten, Oostburg,
Plymouth’s Brian Kaat, Teunissen, and Kevin Zimball (driving for Terry McCoy).
The 20 lap All-American Mighty 4’s feature saw Tim Zorn, Elkhart Lake, take
the lead only to be slowed down for the car of Fond du Lac’s Brian Stern spinning in
turn one. Jeremy Sauter, Sheboygan Falls, took the lead on lap seven and didn’t look
back. Crossing the line behind Sauter was Zorn, Plymouth’s Tim Sauter, Joe Miller/Tyler
Elias, Plymouth, and Howards Grove’s Randy Ostermann, Jr.
Racing resumes at the Sheboygan County Fair Park next Saturday, September 7,
2002 with qualifying beginning at 5:45 PM. Also on tap for then is the Powder Puff
