Laack Levels EWSC Mod A-Main! - Borth Blows ‘Em Away In LLM Action!
By Sheila Karstaedt
Plymouth, WI
August 4, 2002
On a beautiful night for racing, EWSC and MSA fans filled the stands to see Gary Laack, Glenbeulah, make a last turn pass to win the 30 lap Winged Super Modified A-Main. Sheboygan’s Keith Borth took home the checkers in the LLM feature. Super Stock bragging rights went to Brian Gilles, Plymouth. Sheboygan Falls Tim Sauter won the All American Mighty 4 feature and the MSA 360 sprint car victory went to Doug Schenck, Madison.
Laack took control of the flag to flag race from the start. By lap ten, he encountered lapped traffic. On lap 25, pole-sitter Tim McMullen, Plymouth, was charging hard and was running wing to wing with Laack. McMullen took over the lead on lap 26 until the last lap in turn four when Laack passed him for the win. Chasing Laack to the line was McMullen, Kiel’s Billy Kreutz, and Chuck Tuschl, Whitelaw.
The Tuschl Septic Systems Hard Charger Award was claimed by Billy Kreutz for passing 11 cars.
The 15 lap modified B-Main saw Ben Schmidt, Oostburg, take the lead from his front row starting position. Schmidt paced the field for the remainder of the race, weaving his way through lapped traffic from lap nine to the checkered. Finishing behind Schmidt was Kreutz, Oostburg’s Brian Portschy, and Paul Pokorski, West Bend.
Waldo’s Don Singer took the lead in the LLM 25 lap feature until he bobbled on lap two to give the lead to Keith Borth. Borth raced his way through lapped traffic from lap 11 to the end of the race. Following Borth to the checkers was Jason Allen, Fredonia, Sheboygan’s Henry Dickmann, and Singer.
The Bob Akright Hard Charger Award for passing three cars went to JJ Walvoord, Oostburg.
The 15 lap LLM semi feature was yet another rave that went green to checkered. Dave Haag, substituting for the injured Howie Weiss, took the lead from the outside pole position. He surrendered the lead to Chad Espen, Kewaskum, on lap five. Espen finished ahead of Haag, Sheboygan’s Steve Ziegelbauer and Larry Berg.
Brian Gilles, Plymouth, took the lead of the 20 lap Super Stock semi feature. The yellow flag came out on lap six for the cars of Kiel’s Ben Schmidt and Dave Theobald, Sheboygan Falls getting together in turn two. Gilles paced the field on the restart until lap nine when Oostburg’s Mark Scholten lost control of his ride on the front stretch. Gilles stayed out front until the checkered flag fell. Finishing behind Gilles was Brian Genske, Sheboygan Falls, Elkhart Lake’s Bradley Ruh, and Doug Teunissen, Sheboygan Falls.
The Hard Charger Award went to Teunissen for passing 8 cars.
The 15 lap Super Stock semi feature saw M. Scholten take the lead. The caution flag fell on lap ten for the car of Sheboygan’s Mike Humphrey. Scholten set the pace for one more circuit until the yellow came out again for several cars getting tangled in turn four. Scholten went to victory lane followed by Don Kulow, Plymouth, Cleveland’s Steve Schad, and Dean Horneck, Kiel.
Tony Miller, Random Lake, took the lead in the Super Stock C-Main. The hard charging Ben Schmidt took control on lap three. By lap eight, Schmidt found himself weaving his way through lapped traffic. Hounding Schmidt to the finish was Miller, Sheboygan’s Chad Ninmer, and Kyle Odekirk, Plymouth.
The 20 lap All American Mighty 4’s saw Plymouth’s Duane Dippel take the lead until lap two. Dippel got loose and turned the lead over to Tim Sauter, Plymouth. Plymouth’s Jonathan Dippel brought out the yellow by spinning on the frontstretch. Sauter took home the checkered flag followed by Jeremy Sauter, Sheboygan Falls, Dippel, and Sheboygan’s Jeremy Goetsch.
The visiting MSA 360 sprint cars had flag to flag twin B-Mains. Keith Olejnik, Sun Prairie, took control of the first one and never looked back. Finishing behind Olejnik was Randolph’s Andy Hunt, Lance Fassbender, Rubicon, and Mark Wernes, Jr., West Allis.
Jeremy Hedrick, Shawano, pulled out to the lead for the second B-Main. On lap four, Hedrick and Greenfield’s David O’Neal were wing to wing. Hedrick pulled out in front and on lap eight was in lapped traffic. Crossing behind Hedrick was O’Neal, Danny Schlafer, Sussex, and Lomira’s Troy Wondra.
The MSA 360 25 lap A-Main saw Dean Erfurth take the lead in a flag to flag race. Madison’s Doug Schenck too over on lap 15 until the checkered flag fell. Chasing Schenck to the line was Kurt Davis, West Allis, Milwaukee’s Jerry Ski, and Erfurth.
Racing resumes next Saturday night at the Sheboygan County Fair Park in Plymouth. Qualifying begins at 5:45 pm with racing to follow. Autograph night originally scheduled for next week has been postponed until Saturday, August 24, 2002.
