by Greg McKarns

ELKO, MN -- Jake Ryan of Lakeville, MN opened the 12th annual Great Clips Fall Festival of Speed with a win in the Planet Pages Mid-Am Stock Car 75-lap feature Friday night at the Elko Speedway. Ryan, one of eight drivers to break the Mid-Am one-lap track record, finished three car lengths ahead of Curtis Van Der Wal of Oskaloosa, IA. Josh Bauer of Random Lake, WI charged through the field to finish in third. Ricky Martin of Farmington, Mn came home in fourth followed by Peter Hernandez of Mokena, IL and Geroge Schultz of Bristol, WI. A record Mid-Am car turnout for a Minnesota event qualified for the race. Some 33 drivers from four states participated.

"Everything went the way we'd like to see it go," Ryan said. He is currently third in the overall series point standings with two events remaining. Ryan dipped inside of Martin on lap 30 to take the lead. Rod Brewe led the opening ten rounds before Van Der Wal went outside to take over the number one position. Martin got inside of Van Der Wal on lap 15, but couldn't hold back Ryan.

Once Ryan got into the lead he had to hold off the field following two restarts. The first yellow flag flew on lap 42 when Lynn Peterson and Jim Thorson tangled on the backstretch. On lap 70 Scott Ascher spun in turn two and clipped the inside wall.

Harm Alken held on to win the 305 Bomber feature over a hard charging Bob Hasert, the Legend feature victory went to Wisconsin Rapids, WI resident Josh Schoenick while the duos of Phil Peterson/Jay Simon and Kevin Crawford/Jim Pumper recorded Cruiser feature wins.

The 12th annual Great Clips Fall Festival of Speed continues tomorrow night (Saturday) with racing beginning at 6. The NASCAR NorthStar Late Models, Midwest Sportsman, Elko Bombers, American Short Trackers and Modifieds will all see action.
