Royle Crowned Lube-Tech Elko King
by Gregg McKarns
August 17, 2002
ELKO, MN- Adam Royle returned to victory lane in Budweiser Late Model competition as he worked his way past early race leader Kyle Estes with fourteen laps remaining to claim the “Lube-Tech 40” Saturday Night at Elko Speedway. Lube-Tech and its guests raised over $30,000 for the Children’s Cancer Research Fund as part of their night at the races. A late race charge ended in victory for Gary Fredrickson in Super Truck action, Shane Huth took advantage of a slower machine to score his first win of the season in his Miller Lite Sportsman ride. For the second consecutive week Mike Felixberger wheeled his machine to the front of the Coca-Cola Thunder Car field and into victory lane while Tim Hollen topped twenty-nine of his fellow Impact Printing Bomber foes in feature action.
Rookie Kyle Estes battled door to door with Mike Tuma for the opening ten circuits of the “Lube-Tech 40” before claiming top billing. A sizable lead was to follow by the halfway point for Estes while Jon Lemke, last week’s winner Donny Reuvers and Adam Royle worked past Tuma. Royle would be the first to make the move work.
With sixteen laps to the finish, Royle made his move to the inside of Estes, completing what was to become the race winning pass two laps later. Lemke followed suit into second before Reuvers made good on a Lemke bobble moving to second. Reuvers decreased the deficit to twenty four markers between he and point leader Brian Johnson with a second place showing, Lemke remained third with Estes edging fifth place finisher Dean Cornelius at the finish line.
While the laps wound down in the Super Truck feature the night was looking better for Larry Fitzsimmons as he fought off Tony Holm and defending division champion Gary Fredrickson. Third place runner Fredrickson did not have the same vision as he charged from third to first during the final circuits to record his visit to victory lane this season. Holm remained in second, Fitzsimmons dropped to third, Danny Johnson and Paul Neisius posted top five runs as well. Johnson benefited from Jamie Farrell’s misfortunes on the night, leaving with a two point lead over Fredrickson, just four ahead of Farrell who finished eleventh.
The beginning of the Miller Lite Sportsman feature appeared to be taking place on the highbanks of Daytona as the top fourteen cars ran side by side for nearly ten laps. But the tight confines of NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge action kicked in as the two leaders Shane Huth and Thomas Boisvert approached a slower machine. Huth took advantage and shot into the lead leaving Boisvert scrambling to hold off the likes of Kent Eastlick and Jeff Partington.
Boisvert was successful in his challenge but was unable to reel the leader back into his grasp. Huth went on to lay claim to his first feature triumph of 2002, Boisvert settled for second, Eastlick, Partington and Mike Skaja completed the top five positions. A rough night for point leader Ricky Martin allowed Steve Schultz to tighten the point race to a mere six points.
Matt Carlander and Dave Franek stormed around the track looking for the advantage that would allow them sole possession of the lead, which allowed Mike Felixberger and Mark Storlie to catch the lead pack. Felixberger slipped past the two pace setters into the lead. Storlie wheeled his machine with pink wheels into second place but would be unable to catch Felixberger by race end. Franek dropped Carlander to fourth as the checkered flag fell and Brent Kane completed the top five.
Tim Hollen shot into the lead during the Impact Printing Bomber feature and never let go. Tom Nordwall brought home runner up honors, Jeff Cook was third, last week’s winner Nathan Wefel was fourth and fifth position went to Clinton Grandel.
