Haldemann Flies Into Victory Lane

After two weeks off, the thunder returned to the speedway for Beaver Dam Ford night. The constant rain that plagued southern Wisconsin had moved on and provided a fast track for the racers. With plenty of room and multiple lanes the races were close and competitive. Three new faces were seen in victory lane while the fourth was very familiar with its location. At 53 years old and with Geritol in hand Dennis" the flying grandpa" Haldemann made a gutsy move around Nick Woods for the lead and held on for his first win in a couple years in the mod feature. Jeremy Christians overcame an early spin to record his 9th win at the track this year and his 22nd overall this year in the state. Jason Behring took his pure stock to the front and held off his competitors for his first win of the season. Gary "Smiley" Clough stunned everyone by taking his first career win in the hobby stock finale.

The third Drivers Who Care program allowed fans to vote for their favorite driver in the pure stock and hobby stock classes. Steve Seitz would win that race. The proceeds went to M.A.D.D. and the top vote winners had their own race at the end of the night. Being the feature classes of the night the pure stocks were the first to race their feature. Jason Behring took the lead from Randy Schimmel on lap two and never looked back. Schimmel would run second with Seitz just behind and Steger in fourth. The top four ran nose to tail and pulled away from the field. By lap 9 Seitz had moved into second and separated himself from third and fourth. Seitz would try to challenge for the lead but could not make the pass as Behring made his car extra wide. As Schimmel held off Steger for third Behring was able to hold off Seitz and capture his first win of the year.

In the hobby stock race Smiley held the lead from start to finish. Tony Schlei ran in second until lap ten when Jimmy Scanlon took the spot and pressured Smiley for the lead. It appeared that going into the final corner Scanlon might be able to take the lead but he went in too hard and pushed up the track allowing Smiley to take the checkers. The win would leave most shaking their heads and, of course, smiling. Scanlon would have to settle for second with Schlei taking third.

It was apparent from the outset of the mod feature that Nick Woods and Dennis Haldemann were the ones to beat that night. Only two laps in and the two had put considerable distance between themselves and the field. A caution closed the field but had little impact on the leaders. On lap six Haldemann shot past Woods on the outside in the corner and took the lead. Driving smoothly Haldemann put some distance between the two. With the win seemingly in hand the best race was for third as Scott Lewis, Dan Musbach, Sammy Strasser and Jamie Schmidt each took turns running in third place. Another late caution negated the three-second lead that Haldemann had built over the race. Haldemann would continue to lead after the restart as Woods maintained second. Haldemann went on to take the win with Woods and Lewis rounding out the top three. Once again no one completed the clean sweep which will bring Golden's Chimney Clean Sweep Award to $300. This means that the total to win could be $750 to one lucky driver.

For the first 14 laps of the IMCA Stock feature Roger Johnson and Brandon Czarapata wowed the crowd with side by side racing. The battle for third was just as fierce as Bob Mann held off Scott Erdmann, Rob Schmid and Jeff Owens. By halfway Jeremy Christians, having been previously punted to the infield, had worked his way back to the main pack. A caution on lap 14 allowed several drivers to catch their breath. The restart saw Christians move quickly through the field and into second by lap 16. With the front six cars close enough to put a blanket over Johnson hopped over the burm and lost the lead to Christians and would eventually end up fourth. Christians would take the win with Czarapata close behind. Czarapata figured this to be the 12th time he has finished second to Christians at various tracks. Erdmann, Johnson and Mann rounded out the top five.

Next Saturday is the regular season finale. There will be extended features for all divisions plus the race of champions and the second place challenge. Beaver Dam Ford will again be the trophy sponsor.
