Schraufnagel, Christians, Seitz Continue To Win
July 13, 2002

The Dodge County Racing Association sponsored its own night of racing at the speedway Saturday night and saw familiar faces in victory lane. With a big weekend of racing planned plenty of extra cars were on hand to inflate the IMCA Modified and IMCA Stock car ranks. The competition was so stiff that the mod B-main list was similar to a feature run down. Jay Schraufnagel, Scott Lewis, Craig Priewe and other big names each had to race hard to get the transfer spot in the feature. Having won the B-main, Schraufnagel would move to the front to take his fifth win of the season. Jeremy Christians returned to form and notched his seventh win of the year in his IMCA Stock car. Steve Seitz and Jason Jaragoske each picked up another win in the DCRA Pure Stock and IMCA Hobby Stock features.
Remove Jeremy Christians' dominance from the equation and the IMCA Stock car class has been incredibly competitive. IMCA has worked hard on the rules to make a level playing field and it shows when travelers from other tracks come in and can race hard and be competitive with the regulars. Jeff Owens appeared to have removed the monkey from his back and started out fast in the feature. Running along side him for 8 laps was Roger Johnson. With the leaders side by side the entire field did much of the same. With each passing lap Christians took a little off Owens lead and by halfway took over the top spot. A few laps later Owens chances at a good finish were dashed with a flat tire. As Owens exited the track John Stanton inherited second for a lap until Jamie Colwell took it away while Rob Schmid dueled with Johnson. As Christians led Stanton and Colwell ran side by side until Stanton edged out in front to take second for the final 2 laps. Finishing order was Christians, Stanton and Colwell.
With the racing groove only a few feet off the wall Rob Olson raced on the high side of what could be called a 5/8ths mile track while Sammy Strasser ran on the bottom of the big half-mile. For several laps the two ran inside and outside with twenty feet between them. Strasser took the lead as Olson found the that the long way around was just too far and moved to the bottom behind Todd Ascherien and into third. The only caution came when Dennis Schultz struck the spun car of Jeff Respalje head on at full speed. After impact the two cars skidded thirty feet down the track as Craig Priewe slid in sideways making slight contact. Although the drivers would be all right the cars were destroyed. After the caution Schraufnagel moved past a couple cars and onto the bumper of Strasser. Schraufnagel took the lead a few laps later and checked out for the feature win.
Craig Lepple led the first five circuits of the DCRA Pure Stock feature before Steve Seitz took over. As Seitz built a lead, Jim Steger and Nate Schepp were able to get around Lepple and the four cars ran one ahead of the other to the finish. The IMCA Hobby Stock feature was several cars short due to a large accident in the heat race. Jason Jaragoske and Nathan Persha ran door to door for a few laps until Persha spun allowing Jaragoske to go on and win his second feature ahead of Gary Clough and Jimmy Scanlon.
Round two of the Fischbach Tire and Auto Mechanics Races took place at the end of the night with Jeff Dronzek taking the mod win in Ascherien's car. Chad Stange won the Pure Stock race in Darrell Bittner's car and yours truly Craig Seaver won the IMCA Stock race in John Stanton's ride.
Next week is the first of four sponsorship nights for Beaver Dam Ford. Also taking place is the Drivers Who Care program benefiting Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Dodge County.
