HPVs put on stellar show at Badger

Badger Kart Club managed to get Round 17 of the BKC Bridgestone Championship points series in despite heavy rains the night before. Efforts began immediately to dry the track out and by 11:00 practice had begun. One more brief shower stopped the program temporarily, but the rest of the day saw lots of sun.
By far the best show of the day was the combined running of HPV Sr. and Jr. The HPV motor is a spec motor built by the Horstman company, normally known for their clutches. With the specially designed pipes to match these motors, they are faster than the traditional Yamaha motors and require less maintenance.
Throughout the day, the HPV heat races produced exciting times. However, the feature race turned out to be the crown jewel for the day. As the Seniors took the green flag, Matt Mercier got a great jump from the pole. Second place Nicole Baier had to fight off Mike Mueller and Dennis Borchardt which let Mercier slip away a bit. However, as the feature laps wound on, Baier began reeling in Mercier until she was right on his bumper at the white flag. Baier held on right behind Mercier until they came through the last corner for the checkered flag. Baier shot down the inside of Mercier and the two came to the checkers virtually equal. At the finish though, Mercier held on for the win by .053 seconds over Baier.
Meanwhile, during the same race, the top three HPV Juniors ran nose-to-tail the entire race. Jesse Schwabe, who normally runs Jr. SSX Can, switched to HPV for the end of the season. His great run during the day earned him the pole spot in the feature. Ronny Graham, who also runs Jr. Can, wound up on the outside. At the drop of the green, Schwabe jumped out in front with Graham right on his bumper. Zack Emmons decided to join the two and attached himself to the rear of Graham. Throughout the feature, Graham and Emmons looked inside and out, trying passes in several corners. However, at the finish it was Jesse Schwabe by only .080 seconds over Graham who beat out Emmons by only .081 seconds!
Other great races included Erick Heling demolishing the Briggs Animal Sr. class by almost half a lap at the checkers. Matt Cota got a great jump in the Yamaha Lite feature and won over Joel Steffen by 3.5 seconds. Cota also won the Yamaha Sr. Sportsman Lite class, but it wasn’t nearly as easy as second place Jon Ellingham trailed him by one inch the entire race. Ellingham tried several times to get past Cota but just couldn’t make it stick.
Alex Stauber won the Briggs Jr. Stock class over Joe Hartmann and Joe Graff edged out Michael Schumacher in the Jr. Briggs feature. Tylor Wolfert beat David Storm to the checkers in Briggs Lite. Third place Garrett Goth did a nice job of fighting through traffic to wind up third. Rachel Neitzel scored a solid victory in Briggs Heavy over Jon Will and Jerry Smith.
Next week Badger will host the Track Challenge where several tracks from around the area will compete against one another for great prizes and the coveted traveling trophy.
