Matt Cota decided to campaign two classes this weekend and it was definitely
the right move. Cota spent the entire day patiently moving up through heat
races to land the pole spot for both the Yamaha Lite and Yamaha Sr.
Sportsman Lite features. This paid off, as Cota was able to go wire-to-wire
in both features to capture the double-decker.
Tylor Wolfert and Garrett Goth put on a clinic of racing all day long in
Briggs Lite. The two came up against each other again and again throughout
all the heats and the feature. In the end, it was Wolfert as Goth came up
less than a tenth of a second short in the feature in a race that saw the
two never more than a yard apart.
Running at the same time was the Briggs Heavy class. Mike Landeck and Aron
Scalissi were side-by-side for the first couple of laps of the feature. On
lap 3, Landeck got a head of Scalissi by just a bit and the two went
nose-to-tail for the remainder of the feature. On lap 7, as Scalissi tried
to close the gap between him and Landeck, Scalissi managed to pull off
Fast-time for the year with a 44.451.
In the “who dominated who” division, Forrest Biersach won 2-cycle Jr.
Sportsman by almost 5 seconds over second place Pat Olsen. Jerry Kindler
did the same in Yamaha Heavy and Mike Mueller notched a great feature win
over Dennis Borchardt in HPV Heavy by over 3 seconds. Joe Hartmann romped
the field in Briggs Jr. Stock. After taking over first on lap two, Hartmann
just kept pulling away from the field until the checkers flew. And finally,
Erick Heling takes top honors in domination by winning over the rest of the
Briggs Animal Sr. field by over nine seconds. This would also give him the
new track record for this class. David Koeferl was on him early, but around
lap 6, he lost a tire going into turn one and crashed into the hay bails.
Nick Gillette ran an excellent race in HPV Jr. as he passed Bryce Dunn on
lap 2 of the feature and never looked back. Dunn got the jump at the start
but the hard-charging Gillette managed to overcome him on lap 3. In Jr.
SSX Can, Jesse Schwabe got an excellent start over apparent class-champion
Jeff Funk Jr. However, on lap 4, Funk managed to slip past Schwabe and went
on to take yet another feature win in his career.
