Kindler, Cota and others break Badger Records

Article and results for the Bridgestone Tire Badger Kart Club Championship points race

With last week's running of the WKA Grand Nationals at Badger Raceway, the track was lightening fast for round 14 of the BKC Bridgestone Tire Championship points series. The national series uses a much softer tire compound than Badger's local racers, so the extra rubber on the track really helped to break some track records. Unfortunately, the extra traction also caused a number of drivers some problems as Badger saw a record number of red flags (eleven). Fortunately, there were no serious injuries as all drivers walked away with just bumps and bruises.

In the CeeGee Racing Sr. Sportsman Lite class, Matt Cota was strong all day and the feature was no exception. Cota led from the green flag and just never looked back. By race end, he had won by a straightaway and had broken the track record. Steve Mente did virtually the same in the Gish Motorsports sponsored Sr. Sportsman Heavy, setting the new fast time for 2002.

The Coello Racing 125 Shifter class saw Alex Scheuerell hold off Randy Reichardt for 12 straight laps. Although Reichardt was in striking distance most of the race, he just couldn't seem to get around Scheuerell. In The TRS Technology's Briggs Animal Senior, Erick Heling jumped out into the lead but was forced to retire about halfway through with mechanical problems. This relinquished the lead and win to David Koeferl. Unfortunately, he was later DQ'd in tech for a broken exhaust system, handing the feature win to Rachel Neitzel.

In Creative Karting's Jr. Can feature, TJ Nevels picked up another feature win when a big crash at the start knocked out a few of the favorites including points-leader Ronny Graham. Nevels made a great pass on Kyle Gluth going into the left-hand hairpin corner and managed to hold him off for the rest of the race. Joe Brenner finished fourth which should move him into the points lead.

In the Window and Door Shoppe's Yamaha Heavy feature, Mike Fuchs jumped out to an early lead. But by lap 2, Jerry Kindler ran him down and passed him coming into the infield. Kindler then pulled away and in doing so, shattered the old track record by an unofficial seven tenths of a second! Ryan Chzran also broke the track record, but for the SPSI HPV Heavy class as he went wire-to-wire for the win.

Garrett Goth managed to get by David Storm to win the ITR Equipment Briggs Lite feature while Aron Scalissi took the Beaver Dam & Trophy Briggs Heavy win. The race was shortened by one lap when Ryan Berringer's clutch locked up causing him to cross a rumble strip, burying the nose into the track and flipping hard. Berringer walked away with minor bruises, but the track was shut down for fifteen minutes as officials had to clean the oil left by the badly battered kart.
