141 Speedway Wraps up the 2002 Racing Season

The 5th season of racing action at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, Wisconsin came to a close Saturday night and once again Mother Nature did not want championship night part 2 to occur at the 141, but the early start to the Charter Communications 5th Annual Street Stock Supernationals and Hobby and Mini Stock Championships may have proven to be too much for the " Mother". The 2002 season wrapped up Saturday night in slow fashion as the Hobby Stock division ran most of their races in the rain, but in the end the 2002 141 Speedway Hobby Stock Champion is Crytal Koenig out of Denmark, WI. and the 2002 141 Speedway Mini-Stock Champion is Mat VanElzen of Menasha, WI.

Koenig and Maribel's Nathan Wegner went in to the night with less then 40 points seperating the two, but with a 3rd fast qualifying time, a second in her heat race and a 7th place finish in the feature event, Koenig beat out Wegner by 56 points for the championship. Two Rivers, Jolene Mueller, held the pole in the feature but quickly lost it to Maribel's Mat Crass and the "JO" car never looked back and Crass went on for the win. But the big story in the feature was the driving of Reedsville's Matt Reinke. The #99 driver grabbed one of two transfer spots out of the semi to the feature and had to start in the back of the pack. Reinke slowly, in the rain, picked off drivers one by one and at one point battled his way to second and had his sights set on winning the event. Crass was a little too fast and Reinke settled for a second place finish. 1st- Crass, 2nd- Reinke 3rd- Kyle Bauknecht Reedsville, WI., 4th- Kevin Wellner Whitelaw, WI., 5th- Greg Thompson Denmark WI.

As for Koenig, she wrapped a year which saw her not only race, dress and dance at a prom, and race again....all in the same night...she had a very consistent year, Koenig finished all of her races in the top ten, had 11 top 5's, 1 feature win, and qualified in the top 5 every night out. Koenig is hanging up the winning " Midnight Racing" 1975 Chevy Monte Carlo as she will jump up to the Super Stock division at the 141 Speedway next season. The 2002 141 Speedway Hobby Stock Rookie of the Year went to 14 year old Kyle Bauknecht. Though he missed the first 4 weeks of the racing season, this young rookie proved to many that he has what it takes to run laps for years to come at the 141. Bauknecht finished three times in the top 5, pulled down 1 feature win, won 6 heat races and qualified in the top 5 twice. Bauknecht finished 8th overall in points.

Menasha's, Mat VanElzen, may have come into championship night with a substantial points lead in the Mini Stock division, but Manitowoc's Randy Nething made sure he would not go out in style, as the driver of the Pontiac Fiero won the night's feature event. It looked as though it may have been a VanElzen brother one and two finish for a while as the 2002 Mini Stock Rookie of the Year, Greg VanElzen, made the race interesting. The Vanelzens ran hard behind Nething the entire race, but even through several minor cautionary periods, Nething, who picked up his first feature win of the season, had a little too many horses for any one to catch him. 1st- Nething, 2nd- G. VanElzen, 3rd-M. VamElzen, 4th- Jason Meulemans Kaukauna, WI., 5th- Corey Dallman Sherwood, WI. Mat VanElzen capped off a season in which he was pretty much unstoppable. The driver of the #10 Ford Mustang, finished with an astounding 5 feature wins, 12 top 5 finishes and top 5 finishes in qualifying 13 times. No word as to Mat's intentions for the 2003 racing season. Brother, Greg, had a very succesful year in the Mini-Stock division as well as the #93 Ford Mustang knocked down one feature win, 10 top 5's, 2 heat race wins and 9 qualifying times in the top five.

It was also the 5th annual running of the Super Stock Supernationals and here is the finishing order of both the Goodyear tire and Hoosier tire feature events.
