Wilke Waxes Field In Sherman 50 At Columbus 151

Aaron Wilke of Waterloo picked up his first feature win of the year at
Columbus 151 Speedway in the Sherman's Garage and Auto Body 50 Friday night.
Starting in the fifth position , Wilke worked his way up through the pack to
lead the majority of the race. Terry Sauer took the early lead, but was
forced to retire with mechanical failure on only the third lap. The dropout
let Joel Soenksen of Baraboo inherit the lead for a bit before surrendering
the point to Wilke. The battle between father and son duo of Bill and Rob
Retallick for fourth resulted with the elder taking the position on lap
fifteen. Point leader Andy Tomlinson spent much of the race working on Dean
Schultz, but was unable to gain the spot on the offensive. Tomlinson's
struggle on Schultz allowed Wilke to cruise to a five car-length lead on the
field, completing the feature.
After taking the checkered flag first in his respective Street Stock heat
event, Tony Chase led from the pole of the feature at the green. Tony Koepke
of Fort Atkinson worked on the inside of Joe Roatch for third early on in
the contest. By lap seven, Ken Scott of Rio was able to charge to sixth, all
the way up from his eleventh spot on the starting grid. Bobby Stough and
Jason Thoma tried their best to advance in the outside groove throughout the
evening, and had mixed results. Stough closed in on Chase, took a look to
the inside, and edged out in front for the lead on lap twenty. However, on
Ward's push through the field, he made contact with Chase, sending Chase to
the infield and Ward to the back of the pack. Thoma made it as far as third
place from his fourteenth starting position, but it was Stough at the line
by over four car-lengths.
Jim Wingett now sits comfortably in fifth on the Hobby Stock point
standings after charting a win in the thirty-five lap extended feature. Alan
Dorn of Waterloo took the early lead, but surrendered after thirteen laps
with problems. Wingett sat tight on the high line while the inside banged
and bumped. When the chaos began, Wingett made his move to the front. Grant
Lindner battled point leader Gary Pashley for fourth and was able to gain
the position by the end of the race.
Reversely, Rick Verdon won the Backup race.
The special added attraction of the evening was the Trailer Race. Ron Hahn
of Fall River took the win in his Cutlass, followed by Dave Moore, race
night sponsor John Sherman in third, and Steve Privett rounding out the
field.
Coming up Friday August eighth will be Auto Armor night at Columbus 151
Speedway, including trailer races and the crazy four-cylinder Bandits.
September twelvth will be the first-ever Eve Of Destruction at the track;
more details will be available at a later date.
