Steenbergen Double-Duty Stunner At Columbus 151 Speedway

By: Natasha Fabian

July 18, 2003 (Columbus, WI) –The weather was beautiful and the action was sizzling at Columbus 151 Speedway Friday night. The late model division saw an impressive car count come out for the Miller Beer sponsored 50-lap main event. The young drivers have been finding success at the quarter-mile this year; the winners of the last two late model features both being too young to enjoy any of that beer. Friday marked three in a row, with 20-year-old Jeff Steenbergen (Waupun) leading a thrilling pack to the checkers. Steenbergen was more than satisfied with the win, entertaining the crowd with his NASCAR-style doughnuts and burnout on the front straightaway. Concerning the feat, Jeff commented, "I'm really glad to have won this race. My crew and I have been working hard to get this car figured out. It's my first year driving late models (Steenbergen was the 2002 Mid-American Truck series champion) and it's been a great learning experience. I've won some smaller races this year, but tonight the car was just dialed-in. Ed Wolff III ran me real clean, and it was a good race." What really set Jeff apart was that he was running double-duty all evening. Along with the late model, he also races a Predator mini-Indy car with the Formula Indy Racing Association where he was Rookie of the Year three years ago. Steenbergen's run for FIRA was not as successful, he experienced a chain break halfway through the feature. The heat race was an intense battle between Vern Brown (Waunakee) and Jim Bass (Madison) who eventually won after Steenbergen laid off from the point. In the FIRA main, Don Fort (Delavan) took a healthy lead early in the race, but Bass was in the lead by lap five.

Because of the car count, a semi-feature needed to be added. Both non-regulars, Russ Hebel (Endeavor) and Michael Held (Slinger) charged hard for the lead and held on for some great racing. Brent Knight (Watertown) tried diving down for three-wide in turn one, but they didn't all fit. Hebel went around and Held suffered hard body damage. The battle was just as hard between Hebel and Duane Deppe (Waterloo) for the lead on the restart. Hebel took the win, and Deppe, Tyler James (Oconomowoc), and Delbert Desjarlais (Columbus) advanced to the feature. Randy Breunig (Columbus) set fast time in an old Ron Bishofberger (Fort Atkinson) car.

In street stock action, Dennis Schwark came away with the feature win. Currently sitting fourth in points, Jim Rohrbeck (Portage) was forced to retire on lap twelve for mechanical problems. The finishing field was tightly packed in the contest.

Only 187 points separate the top five in hobby stock standings. Gary Pashley (Marshall) was able to extend his lead over Chuck Egli (Waterloo) by besting him a mere one position in qualifying, the heat race, and in the feature. During the 20-lap feature, Tylor Schultz (Rio) finished his evening on lap five when he spun mid-pack in turn two and Lincoln Keeser (Johnson Creek) hit him straight on. A different Keeser owned Chevy driven by Jason Finnegan (Milton) was pulled off the track at the same time for hazardous debris concerns on his machine. Mark Fogel (West Bend) was also removed for water leakage. At the green, Jason Deppe (Waterloo) held the point as Brandon Riedner (Waunakee) breathed down his neck in Ken Scott's (Rio) 2002 championship car. Dave Schwark (Sun Prairie) pulled his Oldsmobile off early for smoking. Jim Wingett (Fall River) was closing in on Deppe, but the eighteen-year-old held on long enough to pick up his first feature win of the year. Like Steenbergen, Deppe gave the crowd a show to celebrate his victory.

The Backups ran an eye-catching race as well. This week it was Bruce Havel taking the win, followed by Dave Moore and Tom Gross. Wayne Hook's (Oregon) trunk lid popped up during the race, forcing him to put his Chevy to the infield.

Coming up Friday July 25th will be a full racing program plus four-cylinder Bandits and Chain Races. It is also Book Night for the kids. August first is Sherman's Garage and Body Shop night with extended features in the top three divisions, and a toy toss at intermission. Friday time trials are at 6:15 with racing at 7:45. Columbus 151 Speedway is located off Highway 151 between Sun Prairie and Columbus on Exit 111 (Highway V); Kraus Road.
