Columbus Locals Add Spice To WCS Show Sunday
by Natasha Fabian
COLUMBUS, WI (May 4, 2003) - With an imminent threat of
heavy showers and crisp winds, the diehard fans attending Columbus 151
Speedway Sunday afternoon remained focused throughout the end of the Spring
Fling 100 Wisconsin Challenge Series.
In support of the event, the
Columbus 151 Speedway street stock and hobby stock classes competed in a
non-points show, as well as the 4-cylinder bandits in an open
invitational.
Erik Darnell, a Beach Park, Illinois, native headed north for
the weekend, picking up sequential wins at Lake Geneva Saturday and the WCS
Spring Fling 100 at Columbus 151 Sunday. The 21-year-old is a rising star
and regular competitor in the NASCAR International Truck and Engine
Corporation Midwest Series.
In local competition, Jim Rohrbeck of Portage
turned quick time for the street stocks with a lap of 14.349. All heat races
were omitted, due to potentially inclement weather conditions. Dave Oswald,
who also won the main event Friday night, came home with a second victory
for the weekend. In hobby stock action Grant Lindner's second qualifying lap
of 12.530 was good for quick time. After a 20-lap battle throughout the
field, Fall River's Jim Wingett piloted his #66 Chevrolet to victory lane.
Friday night's feature winner, Chuck Egli, was able to drive to an
impressive second place finish.
For the 4-cylinder bandits, Dan Birkett
shattered the track record that he had just set on Friday night. He was able
to complete the quarter-mile in 16.383 seconds. Edgerton's Brian Paulson
fought hard to the front of the pack and took the win.
Racing action
continues at the Columbus 151 Speedway on Friday night. In addition to the
late models, street stocks, hobby stocks and back ups, the Formula Indy
Racing Association will be on hand. There will also be a car and driver
photo and autograph session. Also on the schedule will be the blindfold
races. There will be a toy toss for the kids at intermission. For more
