Damrow Gets Win In Season Finale "Heartbreaker" At 141 Speedway
Daryl Gerke of Whitelaw wrapped up the season championship but a last lap pass
in the feature stole the show Saturday night at 141 Speedway.
When the green flag waved at the start, Crystal Koenig and Mike “Ozzy”
Oswald staged a “see-saw” battle for the lead that would go on for the
first nine laps until Oswald moved out to a solid lead. Ozzy would be
comfortable for only three laps though as new track record holder Monte Strouf
was coming fast on the outside and the two would stage another side-by-side
contest with Monte getting the advantage this time.
All during this time, Kevin Damrow of Manitowoc was quietly creeping toward
the front and on lap twenty-one moved to second. By lap twenty five, he was
right at Strouf’s bumper and challenged all the way to the last lap when he
saw a small seam develop at the bottom of turn three, dove in and shot by for
the win. A stunned Strouf took second just ahead of Oswald, Koenig and Dennis
Rabas.
The Super Stocks put on their usual crowd pleaser with twenty-five laps of
sparks, paint trading and heart-stopping action.
At the start, it was Jason Kostichka of Green Bay leading the pack with Pete
Kumbalek giving chase. This only lasted six laps, however, as Adam Pontzlaff
and Brian Van Asten made contact in turn two bringing out the caution.
Kostichka would lead the restart but was overtaken on lap thirteen by Lee
Lielpikowski who was hoping to run away with the win but another caution on
lap 15 for a bad crash involving Jo Gauger and Andy Cassavant stopped the
event once again.
After a lengthy clean-up effort, Lee Kip led the field and held on to the
finish. Greg Thompson, who had sewn up the points championship last week was
second with Kumbalek, Dave Stoffer and Kostichka completing the top five.
In the Mini Stock feature, Kurt Naidl of Denmark was trying to protect his
point lead going into the final night with Jason Novak of Cato doing
everything in his power to try to catch him.
Jordan Thiel of Appleton led the field to the green flag with John Senkbeil
giving chase. The battle would only last four laps though as Naidl and Novak
were involved in a spin that brought out the yellow.
On the restart, Thiel would continue to lead but Eric Turner of Mishicot was
coming hard on the outside and by lap 16 had moved to second and was closing
fast. Jason Wiladson of Sheboygan was also on the move and up to third.
Turner would fall victim to mechanical failure on lap twenty-two though,
allowing Thiel to cruise to his third win of the season. Wiladson was second
followed by Senkbeil, David Gauger, Jr. and Allen Dillon.
Naidl finished well enough to secure his first ever championship with last
years champ Novak finishing second, Turner recovered from a horrible crash
last week to finish the year in third.
The Hobby Stock feature was an eighteen-lap affair that ended with new track
champion besting rookie Aaron Gretz for the win. Kraig Koehler (who was doing
double duty in a Mini Stock on the night and locked up Rookie of the Year
honors in that division) finished third.
In the Sport 4 feature, Kendra Cretton came from the third row using the
outside line to run away from the field and take the win. Bruce Sand was
second with Matt Cherney, Don Murray and Ian Fogeltanz rounding out the top
five.
For the first time ever at 141, the season points were a tie. Murray and
Cherney finished in a deadlock. Cherney is also the youngest champ at the age
of only fourteen.
Next week, 141 presents the Dynamite Destruction Derby with a steel wall
crash, school bus races, Monster Trucks and a flaming finale with the Green
Mamba jet car doing a car meltdown. Gates open at 4pm show starts at 7. All
tickets, all seats just $8!
