Naidl And Berry Big Winners In Triple Crown Challenge At 141
Early day clouds gave way to clear skies and fair temperatures for 141
Speedway’s annual Triple Crown Challenge Series finale Saturday night in
Francis Creek, WI.
In the Super Stock division, former track champ Errol Berry took a night off
and let another past champ, Gregg Haese of Two Rivers take the wheel as a
guest driver for the evening. At the end of the day, it turned out to be a
wise choice.
Point leader Greg Thompson battled with Pete Kumbalek in the early stages of
the 50 lap Glenn “Pa” Murray Memorial feature race and Thompson would
eventually pull away to a substantial lead until lap 15 when Randy Nething and
Tim Conard tangled on the backstretch bringing out the caution flag and
sending both to the pit for quick repairs.
On the restart, Haese made a charge from the outside dueling with Thompson for
three laps before taking over the top spot. Unfortunately, Nething and
Conard had not settled their differences and another caution flag ensued
resulting in the disqualification of both drivers.
Haese once again took the lead when the green fell and never looked back.
Thompson would settle for second, enough to secure his point lead with Lee
Kielpikowski making a late charge to third.
Second place was also enough to secure the Triple Crown Championship for
Thompson.
In the Mini Stock version of the challenge, Kurt Naidl needed a fifth place or
better to cement an overall win and he did one better by coming home fourth in
a feature that went green to checkered over forty laps.
Todd Hebel of Branch outlasted a field that was led for most of the event by
Allen Dillion who broke on lap 30 and ended up dropping to 12th place. 2005
Champ Jason Novak came home second just ahead of Jason Wiladsen of Waldo.
In addition to the Triple Crown Challenge overall title, Naidl retained the
season point lead as well.
The Sport 4 feature was pretty much decided by lap 3 as David Gauger, Sr. ran
away from the field to secure his second win of the year. Don Murray of
Maribel held off the charge of 14-year-old rookie sensation Matt Cherney for
second place. Aaron Dalton and Hank Horn, Jr. rounded out the top five.
The evening was capped with breathtaking come from behind win for rookie Jay
Welsing of Green Bay.
Welsing had to catch and pass three-time champ Jason Rabas to get his second
win in as many weeks. Joshua Setzer was third just ahead of Kris Conard and
Mark Anderson.
Next week, Braun Building Center of Manitowoc presents “All Faiths Night”
at the races with any spectator bringing a church bulletin getting a two
dollar discount on their adult ticket price!
Time trials are at 5 with racing at 7. For more information, see their website
