Cassavant Wins “Junkman’s Delight” Feature At 141 Speedway

The biggest crowd of the year was on hand Saturday night at the 141 Speedway and they were present for the closest racing of the season.

In the Mid-American division the drivers were tuning up for the big series showdown scheduled for next week. Andy Cassavant, the defending track champion, started on the pole driving a new Dodge Charger and took the lead at the drop of the green.

Jimbo Schleis of Manitowoc moved to the second spot and shadowed Cassavant for the first nine laps. At that point a seemingly endless parade of crashes started slowing the show and spreading debris all over the course.

By the end of the race six cars were eliminated from the field and forty-five minutes had elapsed but Cassavant kept his cool and held off the field to take the victory. Daryl Gerke of Whitelaw drove through without a mark and finished second with Kevin Damrow third just ahead of Dennis Rabas and Travis Groelle.

Greg “T-Bone” Thompson of Denmark came into the night with the points lead and hoped to extend it with a win in the feature.

Jim Meisner of Mishicot started on the pole and held on to the lead for the first eleven laps when he got caught up behind lapped traffic and surrendered the lead to Thompson who came from deep in the field with teammate Lee Kielpikowski in tow.

LK gave it his best but in the end it was Thompson winning and stretching his point lead over Todd Welsing. Errol Berry of Francis Creek came up to finish second with Kielpikowski, Josh Sand and Jim Meisner rounding out the top five.

The Mini Stocks put on the cleanest show of the night going green to checker after twenty-five laps of close racing.

Eric “Marvelous Marv” Turner drove through, around and above a very fast field to take a very well deserved victory. Turner came up short in qualifying by one spot as track record holder Troy Selner continued his dominance by taking the number one spot.

But at the end of the day it was Turner who had the last laugh and the feature win. Kurt Naidl used the very top of the cushion on the outside line to charge to the front and take second place away Jason Novak. Selner managed a fourth place finish with Jason Wiladsen coming in fifth.

The Sport four class was a family affair with Bruce Sand of Two Rivers coming home first just ahead of son Jason Sand who started at the back of the field. Jake Fuller of Manitowoc was third.

Next week 141 will host the Dick Grall Memorial 60 for the Mid-American Series cars and stars from three states vs. local stars in the semi-annual shootout. Because this is a rain date, adult tickets are just $8 with Students at $5 and kids under 10 FREE!
