Calabrese Tops Field In Labor Day Enduro At 141

A near capacity crowd packed the 141 Speedway on Sunday for the annual Labor Day Compact Car Enduro race.

Terry Kust of Two Rivers led the opening laps but was overtaken on lap seven by Green Bay’s Todd Welsing.

Welsing held off the field up to lap eighteen when Donnie Murray of Maribel used an inside move through traffic to take the top spot. Un fortunately Murray would be caught up in a crash in turn two and his car was launched into the outfield and nearly into the north parking lot. Murray sustained minor injuries in the incident but didn’t require hospitalization.

On the restart David Beyer moved to the lead with Welsing close behind in second. They stayed that way all the way to the first mandatory yellow at lap 100 when all the cars went to the pits for gas and tires.

When the race resumed the front-runners remained unchanged and all was well until lap 104 when Welsing was caught up in slower traffic and spun in turn two. Although he lost some time he remained in second. until lap 141 when lady luck took a bite out of Beyer sending him to the pits with a flat tire and giving the lead back to Welsing. Jim Schroeder moved to second and Frank Calabrese had worked his way to third.

On lap 158 Schroeder pitted for repairs dropping out of the top ten and moving Beyer back to third ahead of Kust and Duke Truttman.

At the lap 200 break, Welsing had the lead over Calabrese and when the green flag fell again the two drivers began a seesaw battle that would last all the way to the checkered flag where they were so close that officials had to review videotape to determine the winner.

After viewing the tape, Calabrese was declared the winner with Welsing just two one-thousandths behind. Kust held on for third with Beyer and Mike Graziano rounding out the top five six laps down.

The next event at 141 Speedway is the Fall Dynamite Destruction Derby on Saturday September 17 featuring double 0 races, a steel wall crash, the return of school bus racing and a car melting exhibition by Doug Rose and his “Green Mamba” jet dragster. Advance tickets are on sale for just $10 at Patsy’s 42 Mobil in Two Rivers, Larry’s Shell and Van’s Liquor on Calumet in Manitowoc, and I-43 Shell in Green Bay.

Gates open at 4pm with the show starting at 7 sharp. For more information see their website at www.141Speedway.com
