Tisler Takes Feature, Casavant The Crown At 141
August 27, 2005: Francis Creek, WI - Jeff Tisler survived a dramatic
late race caution to win his second Mid-American feature of the season
Saturday night at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek.
Sharing the spotlight with Tisler was Andy Casavant, driving for Marty and
Judy Bey, who secured his first Mid Am track title with a solid third place
run.
Other feature winners on the night were Josh Sand in the Super Stocks, Cory
Kemkes in the Mini-Stocks, Jason Rabas in the David Robinson Memorial Hobby
Stock 50 lap feature and Mike Dolphin in the Sport 4s.
Tension was high as the Mid Americans took the track for their 35-lap feature
with the title up for grabs. Casavant entered the main with a narrow
lead over Daryl Gerke and Travis Groelle. Todd Mott took the lead at the
drop of the green from Tisler. He maintained the top spot until a series
of events changed the course of the feature and solidified the championship
for Casavant.
The first incident involved the leader. Mott had fought off Tisler for
the first 21 laps, and had moved to the outside to pass lapped traffic when he
lost the handle in the fourth turn. The ensuing caution dropped him to
the back of the field with Tisler inheriting the lead. Gerke chose the
outside for the restart and tried to use the momentum to move past Tisler.
After two laps of trying, he dropped in low, just ahead of Dennis Rabas and
Casavant. Gerke continued to pressure until the 30th lap when a radiator
hose popped, drenching the first turn in fluid. No less than six cars,
including Casavant spun up and over the banking, but miraculously none of them
suffered any damaging contact.
With Gerke on the shelf and Groelle behind him, Casavant’s title was all but
secured. Tisler withstood a stiff challenge from the outside by Rabas
over the final five laps to score the win. Rabas settled for second,
with Casavant third, Kevin Damrow fourth and Mike Oswald fifth.
Sand was aided by a late caution in the Super Stock headliner that erased a
big advantage enjoyed by leaders Kevin Charles, Jo Mueller, Jason Henrickson
and Travis Rodewald.
Racing in heavy traffic on the restart, he caught another break, as Charles,
leading at the time, was black flagged for not picking a lane. The point
was suddenly up for grabs with Henrickson, Sand and Greg Thompson in the
hunt. Sand moved to the outside of Henrickson, grabbed the spot and
never looked back en route to his fourth win of the season.
Thompson followed for a second place finish, followed by Henrickson, Mueller
and Rodewald in the top five.
Kemkes made his move on leader Bryan Wetenkamp to take over the lead in the
Mini-Stock main on the fourth lap. He held the spot through a caution on
lap eight, and then steadily began to pull away from the field.
Behind him, four cars broke free in a battle for second: Kurt Naidl,
Troy Selner, David Gauger and Jason Novak. Selner secured the runner-up
spot with 10 laps to go and set sail for Kemkes. On the white flag lap,
Selner had closed to within two car lengths, but couldn’t deny Kemkes his
first feature win.
Behind the lead duo, Naidl placed third followed by Novak and Gauger with
Kevin Peroutka leading the next pack across the line to finish sixth.
The Hobby Stockers enjoyed their longest feature of the season in honor of one
of their own, David Robinson.
Rabas, the division point leader, passed Matt Reinke for the lead on the 22nd
lap and methodically worked his way to a half lap advantage over the rest of
the field. Action was good back in the pack, as Reinke and Kraig Koehler
swapped second back and forth as they diced through lapped traffic. The
contest for fourth was just as entertaining as Adam Pontzloff, Tyler Bauknecht,
Maxwell Schultz and Peter Kumbalek fought for position.
With 13 laps to go, the script changed thanks to a late caution. Rabas’
runaway lead was gone, and it was gone for good. Koehler found new life
and pressured Rabas the rest of the way. At the line, it was Rabas by
two cars lengths for his sixth win of the season and a big step toward his
third straight track title. Koehler, Kumbalek, Bauknecht and Schultz
rounded out the top five.
Sue Cherney was within shouting distance of her first Sport 4 win. After
several laps of side by side racing, she took over the top spot from Don
Murray. Dolphin came from deep on the starting grid to catch her with
the laps winding down. He motored away to his second win of the
season. Cherney was able to fend off a late charge from Bruce Sand to
record a career best second, with Murray fourth and Kendra Cretton
fifth. Cretton had advanced from the last starting spot after winning
the previous week’s feature.
Labor Day weekend means a two nights of racing at 141. Four more
champions will be crowned Saturday night September 3rd as the Speedway’s
regular season will come to an end. The night will also feature the
second visit of the traveling Mid American series, with qualifying at 5:30 and
racing at 7:00. Sunday marks round five of the six race Tisler Salvage
Compact Car Enduro Series. Rain or shine, the green flag falls on the
300-lap event at 7:00PM. For more information, visit the track’s
