Rabas Grabs Win At 141
With temperatures in the nineties an enthusiastic crowd of sunworshipers
packed the stands at 141 Speedway Saturday night and left with an eyeful at
the end of the day.
The annual Wayne Knowles Memorial 50 lap race for the Mid-American stock cars
was the showpiece event of the evening. It opened with Todd Mott of Mishicot
leading and current point leader Daryl Gerke of Whitelaw jumping into the
number two spot.
Reedsville’s Jeff Tisler who has had a tremendous run of good fortune this
season saw his glass come up empty as handling problems caused his car to spin
out three times in the first twenty-four laps forcing his early retirement.
His dad Gary Tisler had a feature win last week but found himself out of the
top five tonight.
Mott held onto the lead until a caution flag on lap twenty-four for Tisler’s
lap spin. On the restart, Manitowoc’s Kevin Damrow assumed the lead and Mott
would give chase until his right rear tire let go on lap forty bringing out
the caution flag and sending him to the pits.
All the first forty, the timers showed one car on the track running the
fastest times on a consistent basis. That was the car driven by Maribel’s
Dennis Rabas who has been running a limited schedule at "The Creek"
this year but showed no signs of rust.
When the green flag flew once again, Rabas jumped to the front and never
relinquished the top spot. Damrow would settle for second holding off Monte
Strouf, Andy Casavant and Jesse Fuller of Manitowoc.
The Super Stock feature started with a roar but surprised all present by not
finishing with a "bang" or a "crash", but the crowd was
definitely on their feet. Maribel’s Nathan Wagner ran side by side with
Randy Nething for the early lead and it looked as though these two would wage
war all the way to the end.
But all the while the leaders were battling, fifteen-year old rookie Maxwell
Schultz of Reedsville was making his car work in the outside lane and was
methodically moving to the front from his number seven starting position.
Point leader Josh Sand took a similar path and by lap 22 of 25, these two were
on top.
Schultz would drive it home, however, getting his first-ever feature win in a
Super and getting a standing "O" from the crowd. Sand was a strong
second ahead of teammates Don Wood and Greg Thompson. Wagner would bring his
ride in fifth.
Troy Selner of Green Bay kicked off his day at the races by continuing his
year-long unbeaten streak in qualifying smashing the track record with a time
of 13.215 and putting the competition on notice.
When it came time for the feature event, Selner had drawn an outside position
on the front row of the grid and would completely dominate the twenty-five-lap
race. He was so strong on this night the last year’s champ and perennial
hard charger David Gauger, Jr. finished second nearly an entire straightway
behind. Jordan Thiel, Mishicot’s Paul Ray and Cato’s Jason Novak rounded
out the top five.
The Hobby Stock’s normally close out the evening with a twenty-five-lap
feature but tonight they opened the show with a make-up race from last week.
Green Bay’s Lee Kielpikowski led the first ten laps with current point
leader and defending champ Jason Rabas in hot pursuit. Rabas used a pass on
the outside in turn three to take the lead and both Pete Kumbalek of Green Bay
and Kraig Koehler of Two Rivers followed.
That’s the way they would finish their first feature of the night. Max
Schultz, pulling double duty in a hobby stock, finished in fifth.
In feature number two, Kielpikowski would not be brushed aside so easily. He
started on the pole, took the early lead and held it all the way to the end
getting his first feature win at 141. Kumbalek moved to second with Rabas,
Reedsville’s Matt Reinke and Schultz completing the top five.
On this night of firsts, Don Murray of Manitowoc would start dead last in the
Sport 4 feature and battle his way to the top of the heap and grabbing his
first ever win. Rick Lorrigan would bring his ride in second and Brillion’s
Mike Blashka was third making it an all Ford podium for the first time in
recent memory.
Next week, F. Radandt and Sons present the third and final round of the 141
"Triple Crown Challenge" with forty lap features for the Supers and
Minis, a visit from the Wisconsin Sport Trucks and a big crowd favorite;
"Run What You Brung" one on one street drags where spectators can
bring their street driven cars onto the track and compete head to head for a
winner take all purse of $200.
Spectator gates open at 4pm with qualifying at 5:30 and racing to follow at 7.
