Tisler Gets Tops Mid-Am Tilt At 141

After being washed out by Mother Nature the week before, clear skies and the largest crowd of the season so far were present for the show Saturday night at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek.

The Mid-American Feature showcased some of the best racing of the night. Monte Strouf in a Chevy Monte Carlo would lead at the drop of the green but Mike "Ozzy" Oswald of Manitowoc drove around him in his Ford powered ride to take the top spot on lap two.

Gary Tisler of Cato ran side by side with Strouf battling for second with Kevin Damrow and Rod "Pee Wee" Dart doing the same for fourth. By lap 14, however, Damrow had cleared to fourth and current point leader Daryl "Homeboy" Gerke had advance to fifth.

After a caution on lap 18 for a spin by Greg Marks, Tisler used a hole shot on the outside to drive by Oswald for the lead. Damrow would pass Ozzy for second one lap later and the trio played follow the leader all the way to the finish giving Tisler his first feature win ever. Bob Schultz in the Lorrigan Construction Monte Carlo managed to come home fourth just ahead of Strouf.

The Super Stock division feature was literally "lights out" as on lap three with Tim Conard leading the field, a power outage knocked out the track lighting stopping the race.

The promoter at 141 was prepared for this (albeit accidentally) and brought out Doug Rose from Milwaukee with his Green Mamba jet car to put on a car burning exhibition with lit up both the night and the crowd.

When the lights came back on and racing resumed, Conard continued to lead with Jimbo Schleis of Manitowoc running almost side by side in second. The competition wasn’t far behind, though, as defending track champ Don Wood had moved to the third spot by lap eight and was poised to challenge the leaders.

However, before wood could make a move a caution flag was displayed for a crash involving the cars of Randy Nething and Nathan Wagner. The green came out again but only for one lap as Kevin Charles made contact with the Crystal Koenig’s ride in turn two sending the Denmark racer off the backstretch and through a billboard.

With the field dwindling and the time limit becoming a factor, the green came out for the final time on lap fifteen. Conard, Schleis and Wood were running in a pack up front and the jury was out as to who would take the victory until lap 18 when Wood made contact with Conard’s car spinning him out and bringing out another yellow.

As a result of the incident wood and Conard were sent to the rear of the field and, since the time limit had been well exceeded, Jimbo Schleis was awarded the win.

In the Mini Stock feature, Mark Truckey of Appleton was again out to shake his nickname of "Unlucky" Truckey and led the opening laps of the race. Truckey was leading the feature two weeks earlier when his engine died two laps from the end adding to a long list of mishaps that had befallen him this season. This night would be different, however, as someone else’s misfortune would result in a win for Truckey.

By lap eight, defending track champion David Gauger, Jr. had moved into second place and was chasing Truckey down at a rapid rate. By lap 10 they were running side by side for the lead with Gauger actually lead a lap or two along the way.

By lap 22, Corey Kemkes had moved up to make it a three-way race for the lead and Gauger had a good run going out of turn three and seemed to be on his way to the front when they were both slowed by a lapped car in the high groove and had to drop back.

Three laps later, Rick Kretchman would spin out bringing a caution flag and once again the race was called because of time limit giving the win to "Mr. Lucky" Mark Truckey. Gauger and Kemkes were second and third followed by Bryan Wetenkamp and

The Sport Four class was the only group to complete their entire race within time constraints this night. Bruce Sand of Two Rivers came back after a week off due to injury to get the win in the Australian Rules race (a coin flip prior to the event determines the direction they travel; on this night clockwise). Hank Horn, Jr. of Brillion was second with point leader Mike "Fatbottom" Dolphin third.

Because of local curfew restrictions, the Hobby Stock Feature did not run but will open the show next week as the Hobby’s will have a double feature night. Also, TA Motorsports of Francis Creek will be giving away a Suzuki ATV to some lucky race fan as part of their night at the races.

Time trials are at 5:30 with racing at 7 sharp. For more information please see their website at www.141Speedway.com
