Gerke Gets Win In Mid Am Points Tilt At 141 Speedway
Gale force winds and torrential rains on Friday night threatened to wash out
the show. However some fast work by a sturdy repair crew got the show off on
time to the delight of a capacity crowd.
The cars and stars of the Mid-American series were in town to battle the local
boys for track supremacy. The first shot was fired in qualifying with
Todd Mott of Mishicot took his first fast time ever in a Mid-Am car.
In the feature event, Jesse Fuller of Manitowoc led the field to the green
flag of the Dick Grall Memorial 60 Lap race with Jason Takahani in hot
pursuit.
By lap four Bill "The Franklin Flyer" Prietzel, the current point
leader, had moved to third place just behind rookie Kevin Damrow of Manitowoc.
Damrow would stay with the cagey vet pulling beside him on lap 14 and running
side by side for five laps until Prietzel got clear and started his pursuit of
the leader Fuller.
For the next thirty laps, Fuller and Preitzel would dice for the lead with
Fuller never giving up the top spot. Meanwhile, Daryl Gerke of Whitelaw was
coming hard on the outside moving toward the front of the field with 04 track
champ Bob Schultz following right behind him.
By lap 50, Gerke had moved to second and looked for any way around Fuller that
he could find but to no avail. Preitzel would settle for second just ahead of
Schultz and Todd Mott.
During post race inspection it was discovered that Jesse Fuller had an illegal
upper arm in his front suspension which resulted in his disqualification
giving the win to Gerke.
The Super Stock division feature was dominated from start to finish by Travis
Rodewald of Manitowoc who led the event from the start.
Kevin Charles got his best finish of the year coming home second with
Josh Sand getting third by just a fender over track champ Don Wood..
Jimbo Schleis of Manitowoc rounded out the top five.
Mini Stock was a walk in the park for track record holder Troy Selner who came
from a mid-pack starting position to the lead in just seven laps and ran away
from the field to get his second win of the season.
The closest thing to a challenge Selner saw was a late race charge by Paul Ray
who used the outside line to drive his ford to a second place finish over five
car lengths behind. Jason Novak continued a strong season with a third
place run just ahead of the Dodge powered entries of Allen Dillon and Bryan
Wetenkamp.
Hobby Stock saw Brain Rathe take the early race lead with Pete Kumbalek in hot
pursuit.
Kumbalek overtook Rathe on lap 9 and ran away from the field to get his first
win of this season. Jason Behnke of Brillion won a drag race to the
finish line for second over track champ Jason Rabas. Matt Reinke and
Kris Conard completed the top five.
The Sport 4 race went to Bruce Sand of Two Rivers who picked up his first win
of the year. Mark Christiansen of Mishicot took second just ahead Terry
Koenig, Mike Blashka and Ryan Brandes.
Next weekend 141 Speedway presents a holiday double header with a 300 lap
compact car enduro race on Saturday, July 2 and the annual "Dynamite
Destruction Derby" on Sunday, July 3. Both events get underway at
7pm with a giant fireworks show after the Sunday night show.
