Cassavant Gets First Mid-Am Win At 141

Cloudy conditions and cool weather prevailed at race time Saturday at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek. However, the largest crowd of the season this year was on hand for the action in all five divisions.

The Mid-American Sportsman feature started with a "bang" as Jimmy Wilson of Appleton lost the handle on his ride coming off of turn four and slammed into the infield barrier on lap two. Wilson was unhurt and the car suffered only minor damage.

On the restart Andy Cassavant of Two Rivers led the field with Mike ‘Ozzy" Oswald and Dennis Rabas in a seesaw battle for second place. Meanwhile Whitelaw’s Daryl "Homeboy" Gerke was making a charge from the rear of the field and had worked his way to seventh using a very slippery outside groove.

Things remained pretty much the same until lap 21 when rookie Don Wood of Maribel lost traction in turn 4 and spun his Pontiac bringing out a caution flag that would tighten up the field and make for an exciting finish.

It turned out that the finish would come earlier than expected though as the caution came out three laps later when Greg Marks spun at the top of turn three bringing out another caution. At this point the race had reached its time limit and Cassavant would take the yellow/checker combo in the M.J. Bey racing Chevy for his first feature win in the division. Rabas, who was guest driving for Melichar Motorsports came home second just ahead of Gerke. Gary Tisler and Oswald completed the top five.

The Super Stock feature marked the return (albeit for one night as a guest driver for Conard Racing) of fan favorite Errol Berry of Francis Creek. Berry appeared to struggle a bit in practice and the heat race with the unfamiliar ride. However, the feature would be a different story.

At the start Berry would lead with Jimbo Schleis and Jo Mueller trading paint for second. Right behind them was a pack of six cars including Travis Rodewald, Jason Hendrickson, Don Wood, Greg Thompson and Randy Nething all within inches of each other jockeying for position.

Normally with racing this close in the Super Stocks there are yellow flags aplenty but everyone stayed clean and green until lap twenty when Kevin Charles had a right front spindle let go showering the field with sparks and throwing a wheel in turn three. Of course the race needed to be stopped to remove the car and debris setting up a five-lap dash to the finish.

When the green flew it was no contest as "Good Ole Semi-Retired" Berry jumped to the lead and held on for the win, his first in over a year.

On to the Mini Stocks where it’s safe to say that the only person on the track that really enjoyed the race was eventual winner Jordan Thiel of Appleton.

Cory Kemkes, another rookie who also had a heat win earlier in the evening, would lead from the start and stayed there for the better part of the race. Eric Turner, Kurt Naidl and defending champ David Gauger, Jr. would start in the middle of the pack but worked their way through traffic quickly. It was the traffic that proved their undoing, however, as was evidenced on lap 14 when Naidl and Kevin Wellner made contact collecting Gauger and bringing out a caution. All three would be sent to the rear for the restart.

From that point on it appeared it would be smooth sailing for Kemkes who rebuilt the lead he lost with the caution and seemed destined to get the win when he suddenly spun out coming onto the front stretch putting Thiel in the top spot.

Of course this is 141 Speedway and it wouldn’t be Saturday night at "The Creek" without a little controversy. When Kemkes spun out the yellow flag was displayed stopping the event. What everyone failed to immediately recognize was that the race had exceeded its time limit and yellow/checker should have been displayed and the race ended immediately. Literally seconds later when officials caught the faux pas a few of the competitors had already entered the pits for repairs and by rule should have been scored at the rear of the pack. It took over an hour at the end of the program for scorers to sort out the mess to the dissatisfaction of nearly everyone involved.

In the end however it was Thiel getting his first ever feature win at 141. Allen Dillon of Two Rivers finished second with Erik Turner, Mark Truckey and John Senkbeil getting third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Next up were the Hobby Stocks who to this point had been having some of the bast feature races of any class at 141 this year and they did not disappoint tonight.

Brian Rathe led the field to the green flag with Max Schultz and Lee Kielpikowski in hot pursuit. Close behind them was a tightly packed group that included Tyler Bauknecht, Adam Pontzlaff, Matt Reinke and Pete Kumbalek.

On lap eight the complexion of the race changed dramatically as Kielpikowski used some "bumper mustard"to nudge Rathe loose, spinning him out in turn four. To his credit, Rathe could have shut off the motor and caused a caution that would have put him and Kielpikowski at the end of the lead lap. However, Rathe got his ride clear of traffic pulled back onto the track and kept the race caution free as a result.

While all of this was going on Bauknecht and Schultz had begun to break away from the field a bit and began staging a side by side battle for second. Near the end, Bauknecht would clear Schultz and chase down the leader who got a bit of his own medicine when he was spun out on the backstretch just after taking the white flag.

Although Bauknecht would cross the line first, track officials had seen one two many "bump and runs" this night and Tyler was disqualified for rough driving and the win went to Matt Reinke with Schultz, Kumbalek, Jason Rabas and Pontzlaff rounding out the top five.

So the big question was, could any division stay clean and green from start to finish on this night of crash and controversy? Maybe it would be the Sport 4 division.

The Sport 4’s, who are well known for trading paint and "mixing it up" on the quarter mile accomplished what all the other classes could not and went green to checker. Not only that but they did it with the most crowded field, the least experience group of drivers and the closest finish of the night.

Point leader Hank Horn, Jr. started at the tail end of the field and threaded his way through heavy traffic to take the win just two tenths of a second ahead of Mike Dolphin. Rachel Gauger of Two Rivers came back from a disastrous crash last week to take third just in front of Bruce Sand and Aaron Dalton.

On the lighter side, 141 held it’s first ever "Faster Pastor" race featuring 10 ministers from various churches in the area competing in Enduro-type cars. Many in attendance were congregation members who came out just to see their pastor go wheel to wheel with their peers.

The closest thing to controversy in this event was one of the men of the cloth had a tire go down and got a very reluctant black flag from the starter. Although he should have gone directly to the pits the pastor in question completed two more laps as if perhaps answering to a "higher power" (?)

Although Pastor Sievert was first across the finish line, we want to salute all of the churches that participated. They are:

St. Peter's Lutheran of Mishicot, First German Lutheran of Manitowoc, Grace Lutheran of Manitowoc, Immanuel Lutheran of Manitowoc, Our Savior Lutheran of Two Rivers, Manitowoc Lutheran HS, St John's Lutheran of Two rivers, St. John's Lutheran of Newtonburg and St. John's Lutheran of Maribel.

The whole event was great fun and promoter Matt Rowe said that after seeing the enormously positive response of the fans, he plans to have more events of this type in the future

Next week Sneekers Bar of Manitowoc presents the Dick Grall Memorial 60 lap race for the Mid-American point series cars plus the regular Saturday night program. Time trials at 5:30pm with racing at 7 sharp.
