Rookie Damrow Gets Feature Win In 141 Opener

141 Speedway kicked off its racing season Saturday night with a five division show filled with thrills, spills, and a chill in the air.

There were a lot of major changes in the off-season at the track but the two which had the greatest impact of the night were rule changes.  Specifically, changing the “move over” or lapped car rule from the top line of the track to the bottom and a new restart procedure where all of the cars involved in the race would get to pre-select their lane before the green flag reappeared.

Most drivers polled favored the new “pick a lane” restart while the consensus on the new “move over” rule was quite the opposite. Both of these changes had a major effect on results.

In the Mid-American division, Todd Mott and rookie Kevin Damrow led the field to the green flag swapping the lead three times in the first three laps.

Damrow pulled out to a car-length lead on lap four leaving Mott to battle with Brett Piontek for second.

By lap fifteen the top two remained the same but Daryl Gerke, Andy Cassavant and Jeff Tisler had moved up to make it a five car battle for the lead.  Gerke ran the outside and moved up to second but couldn't pull off the pass on the leader.

At the end of the thirty five lap event it was Damrow taking the win in his first ever race at 141 with Piontek a close second. Gerke would finish third just ahead of Cassavant and Mott.

The Super Stocks lived up to their "slam bang" reputation with a three car collision on the first lap with Tim Conard colliding with Jason Hendrickson and putting Jason Kostichka into the wall shearing off his rear wheel. On the restart, Jimbo Schlies grabbed the lead and battled with half of the field at one time or another during the twenty five lap event but hung on to take the win.

The biggest challenge came from Nathan Wagner who ran side by side with Schleis for six laps and even took the lead for two of those. But Schleis was persistent and drove around Nathan for the win.  Don Wood got around Wagner for second with Crystal Koenig and Travis Rodewald rounding out the top five.

Travis Rodewald had been having a strong run throughout the race but was sent to the rear of the field when, while the cars were aligning for a restart after a caution flag, Rodewald chose one lane but after passing the orange cone that marks the commitment point, he changed lanes again in violation of the rules.

The Mini Stock feature was punctuated with caution flags for debris on lap twelve and for a crash on lap eighteen involving John Senkbeil and Kevin Peroutka who collected the car of Kurt Naidl in the aftermath.

During most of the race leader Allen Dillon had his mirror full of mat Van Elzen who dogged his from the drop of the green. Van Elzen took over the lead for two laps but Dillon re-took the top spot late in the event. Meantime, Rick Lyons, driving the only Ford Pinto in the field waited for a door to open and found it on lap twenty one using the outside lane to drive around Dillon to get the feature win. Jason Novak and Dave Gauger , Jr. were third and fourth respectively. Van Elzen was the victim of a late race three wide situation and fell back to fifth place.

In the Hobby Stock Division it seems the more things change the more they stay the same as two-time defending track champ Jason Rabas came from a middle of the pack starting spot to take the lead in just seven laps and ran away with the victory. Rabas also made it a clean sweep by winning his heat race earlier in the evening. Maxwell Schultz, who started on the pole and led the initial laps would come home second ahead of Matt Reinke, rookie Kraig Koehler and Pete Kumbalek.

Although he finished in the top five, 2004 rookie of the year Jesse Behnke was disqualified for a late race rough driving incident and was dropped to last place.

In the Sport 4 division, Mike “Fatbottom” Dolphin went “wire to wire” leading every lap and getting the win in the twenty-five lap feature event.  Mike Blashka used some strong moves in heavy traffic to move up to a strong second with Dave Gauger, Sr. close behind in third.

141 Speedway will now be closed for most of the month of May to complete repairs and improvements to the building and grounds. The regular weekly shows will resume Saturday May 28th. Time trials at 5:30pm with racing at 7pm sharp.

The next day at 7pm, 141 will stage the next Tisler Salvage Compact Car Enduro race. It will be a three hundred lap affair finishing under the light.
