Bright sunshine and clear skies greeted fans at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek
Saturday for theannual 300 lap "Creepy Classic" enduro race.
Steve Avery of Two Rivers was on the pole for the event with Jim Brooks,
Mike Oswald and Wendy Welles flanking him in the front row.
When the green flag fell Brooks jumped out to the early lead with point leader
Todd Welsing and last years champion Jeff Meulemans close behind. This
continued until lap 63 when Meulemans pitted and did not return to the race
leaving Brooks to battle for the lead with Mike Graziano.
A scheduled yellow flag fell at lap 100 with Brooks just ahead of Graziano.
This would be the story for the rest of the contest as these two would trade
the lead at least ten times in two hundred laps. On lap 276, Graziano
passed Brooks for the last time and skillfully wove through traffic to take
the win and claim the $1,000.00 first prize by just over nine seconds.
Brooks finished second in the race and second in the season points race which
concluded at this contest.
Veteran enduro racer Frank Calabrese of Shiocton finished third five laps
back. Brian Diener and Jamie Schmitt rounded out the top five.
This race was also the final race of 2003 in the enduro series with Todd
Welsing of Green Bay winning the season points championship by just three
points over Brooks. Terry Kust and Mike Bressler tied for third place with
Jeff Meulemans of Appleton finishing fifth.
The next event at 141 will be the the New Year's Day Enduro Race sponsored by
Tisler Salvage; a two hundred lap event. Pit gates open at 10 am with racing
getting underway at 2pm.
The annual 141 Speedway Awards banquet will be held January 10th at Michael's
