Kerkhoff Wins Again At 141
Joe Kerkhoff of DePere defended his point lead in the Mid_American stock car
division in grand fashion Saturday night by winning the thirty-five-lap
feature race at 141 Speedway.
Kerkhoff started on the outside of the front row and battled crowd favorite
Travis Groelle who held the point for the first half of the race. In fact
Groelle seemed destined to win his first feature event building a six car
length lead.
However, on lap sixteen Gary Benion of Kaukauna lost the handle on his ride
and spun out in four bringing out the caution and erasing the big lead.
On the restart, Groelle and Kerkhoff were once again going door handle to door
handle for the lead when the two made contact coming off turn two causing
Kerkhoff to spin and bringing out another caution. Groelle was found to be at
fault for the incident and was sent to the rear of the field while Kerkhoff
was awarded the lead.
The race restarted on lap eighteen and although he would get an immediate
challenge for the lead from Mike Rahn Kerkhoff would not be denied. Rahn
finished second just ahead of Bob Schultz, Greg Herrmann and Dennis Rabas.
In the Super Stock race, Bruce Hendrickson of Two Rivers fought off challenges
by almost the entire field to get the win.
Hendrickson started on the pole led the race wire to wire but not without a
fight. Randy Van Roy and Josh Sand dogged the eventual victor nearly every
lap, even making contact once or twice. But Hendrickson stuck to his guns and
held them off to get the win.
Van Roy finished second edging closer to season points leader Andy Cassavant
with only one race left on the calendar. Sand was third just ahead of Crystal
Koenig and Jimbo Schlies.
The twenty-five lap Mini Stock feature saw the lead change seven times with
Randy Nething of Manitowoc leading the opening laps. Mike Meyerhofer of
Harrison had other ideas, though, challenging Nething on the outside and
actually taking the lead at one point.
Nething took the lead back after just one lap though as Jay Sand began to
challenge Meyerhofer for second. The two made contact on lap nine and spun out
bringing out the yellow flag and sending them both to the rear of the field.
On the restart Nething again held the point but had a strong challenge on the
outside from Green Bay’s Chris “Flash” Yerges. The two would seesaw for
two laps but Yerges overpowered him for the lead and began running away from
the field.
The lead would be short lived however as John Senkbeil lost a wheel in turn
two bringing out the yellow and erasing the advantage Yerges had built.
In the meantime fast qualifier Tom Melichar of Mishicot had patiently worked
his way to the front and would restart on the outside of the front row.
Melichar and Yerges ran side by side for a couple of lap with the “Mishicot
Missile” actually taking a brief lead. But Yerges came back and fought off
the challenge for his second career victory.
Melichar finished second with current point leader Mark Christiansen, Nething
and Allen Dillon rounding out the top five.
Curt Thomas seemed as though he was on his way to his first ever win in the
Hobby Stock feature. Thomas started on the pole and held off the field
through twelve laps punctuated with multiple yellow flags for crashes and
spins involving about a third of the twenty-car field.
Lap twelve proved to be Thomas’ downfall though, as he was shuffled to the
middle of the pack and Matt Reinke of Reedsville when to the point.
Reinke was never seriously challenged taking his first win this season.
Jason Rabas took the second spot with Greg “T-Bone “ Thompson, Jo Mueller
and point leader Kyle Bauknecht third, fourth and fifth respectively.
The guest class of the night was the Rascal Outlaw winged mini-sprints who put
on an impressive show in their feature with point leader Butch Torkelson
picking his way through the field for the win.
Mark Findley and Chris Bedore finished second and third.
Next week the Mid-Am and Super Stock points champs will be crowned on John
Koss Builders night at 141 Speedway. Time trials are at 5:30pm with
racing at 7. For more information go to their website at www.141Speedway.com.
