Rabas Takes Feature Win At 141
August 23, 2003
Dennis Rabas of Maribel took his second feature win of the year Saturday night
at 141 Speedway. Rabas led from lap one and never looked back. Point leader
Joe Kerkhoff of DePere gave chase but didn't have enough laps to catch Rabas.
Ben Kroll of Green Bay did manage to catch Kerkhoff on the last lap for second
with Gregg Haase and Greg Herrmann getting third and fourth.
Kerkhoff did maintain lead in the season points by finishing ahead of Haase.
Currently they are separated by only six points.
The Mini stock feature had an ominous start as not even one lap was completed
before the engine let go on the car of Allen Dillon. This caused a long delay
as a large oil slick needed to be removed from turns 3 and 4.
Dave Gauger, Jr. of Manitowoc led the opening laps with Mike "Ozzy"
Oswald right behind in second until lap seven when Buster Knapp spun his ride
in turn one bringing out yet another caution.
On the restart Gauger continued to lead but Jay Sand was closing quickly and
threatened to take over first. This battle continued until a spin on lap
seventeen, again by Knapp which brought out another yellow flag and tightened
up the field. On this restart, Gauger again was the leader and held on for one
more lap when Paul Ray of Mishicot found an opening down low in turn two and
took the lead.
Ray would survive another caution on lap twenty and go on to take the win; his
second of the year. Oswald took second with Mark Christiansen, Gauger and Tom
Melichar rounding out the top five.
The Super Stock feature was lead flag to flag by Billy "The Kid"
Gast of Hilbert who took his second feature win.
Two yellow flags punctuated the race. One was for a spin on lap eight by
Nathan Werner in turn one that the entire field drove around and the race was
quickly restarted. The other occurred when Kevin Charles lost the handle on
his car and collided with Todd Hacker in turn two. Denny Crass of Maribel was
behind that pair and tried to avoid the incident only to collide with the tire
wall at the top of turn two.
When the green flag came back out, Gast continued to lead and held off a late
charge by Jeese Gracyalny who took second just ahead Josh Sand, Crystal Koenig
and Jimbo Schleis.
The Hobby Stocks went “green to checkered” on this night with Jason
Schnieder and Mat Crass going side by side for the first ten laps. At that
point Crass pulled to a five-car length lead that he would never surrender.
Greg Thompson drove from the middle of the field to a second place finish with
Schnieder, Brian Stanelle and Andy Cassavant completing the top five.
The Wisconsin Sport Trucks were the guest class of the evening and ran a
twenty lap feature event in which Scott Bushman started second but finished
first. Dan Hansen got second in a photo finish with Scott Baker and Jason
VanHandel third and fourth.
Next week 141 Speedway hosts the Yellow Book Mid-American series points race
with a fifty-lap feature closing out the Saturday night show. Drivers from
four states will travel to Francis Creek to take a shot at the local Mid-Am
specialists. Time trails are at 5:30 with racing at 7pm.
Then on Sunday, The Tisler Salvage Compact Car Enduro Series continues with a
three-hundred lap event and a giant fireworks display. Racing starts at seven
each night. For more information go to their website at www.141Speedway.com.
